Faith schools are a beacon of excellence

Give me a boy at seven, said the Jesuits, and I'll give you a man. If only, moan aspirational parents up and down the country: they would love to hand their kids over, but, like most faith schools these days, the Fathers' establishment is bound to be over-subscribed.
Statistics published this week show why. Faith schools make up only a third of all primary schools, yet they constitute two thirds of the best performers. In an education system where a quarter of children leave school without knowing how to read, and more than half of all pupils fail to gain five C grades at GCSE (if you include English and maths), faith schools form an oasis of excellence.
