Do you like rock music, humanism, AND the Secular Student Alliance? The new band Words Such As Burn just released an album about and for atheists and humanists - and want to use it to help the secular movement. The band has pledged to donate 100% of proceeds from the title song, Flow, and a portion of the proceeds from the album as a whole to the Secular Student Alliance.
Lead singer Bruce Harris describes the humanist message in Flow, saying:
Flow is about what religion costs us, believers and unbelievers alike, in terms of lost love and wasted friendships. Most atheists I know have experienced the familiar story; Maybe a friend or relative who learns about our lack of faith, who then begins to treat us differently."
The album, which also includes the songs "Fallacy One: Argument from Ignorance", "Over You" and their cover of "I Got Mine", was recorded, mixed and distributed entirely from their homes. The band consists of Bruce Harris, (vocals & bass), his brother Sammy Harris (drums & recording engineer), Chris Holcomb (lead guitar), and the father-son combo of Charles (keyboard) and Todd Stiefel (rhythm guitar). They were recently featured on the Humanist Hour Podcast this month and have agreed to play at Rock Beyond Belief ocurring in March of 2012.
Amazon.com has a sample online, and the band has provided lyrics:
Flow
I know you can't sleep at night
You worry about me.
And I know you wish I would
Return to the fold.
Can't do as I'm told.
Because I don’t believe and won’t pretend
That your beliefs are sacred.
Not sacred.
Sometimes I can't sleep at night
You worry about me.
I wish you could see from my side
See through my eyes
I know you can't sleep at night
You fear for my soul.
You only want what’s best for me
But I can't do as I'm told.
Can't do as I'm told.
Because I don’t believe and won’t pretend
That your beliefs are sacred.
They’re yours to defend.
And I don't say this to hurt you
But because you have to know.
If you love me, then...
Let love flow.
Lately, I can't talk to you
You no longer hear me.
But I’m the same; the change is you.
The true cost of your belief
I know this won't change over night
But please don’t let go
I’ll meet you half way, take my hand
and don't go with the flow.
Don't do as you’re told.
Do not believe and do not pretend
That your beliefs are sacred,
Nor are mine, my friend.
Tell me, how can I show you,
That your beliefs are torturing us?
If you love me, then...
Let love flow
The single, Flow, can be purchased on iTunes or here for 99 cents - remember, 100% of the proceeds (~$0.70 per download) go to the Secular Student Alliance!
