The video concisely and eloquently summarizes the Ten Point Vision of a Secular America.

Dr. Elisabeth Cornwell, Executive Director of the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science US, said, “Visitors to www.richarddawkins.net voted on their favorite video. We were pleased with all the entries, but we are particularly excited about the quality of Mr. Scheib's winning entry. This video captures the innovative spirit of what we are doing at the foundation.”

Dr. Andy Thomson, Treasurer of RDFRS-US said, “The Foundation is thrilled with this video and eager to fly Mr. Scheib and a guest to Washington, DC for the Reason Rally and a private reception with Professor Dawkins.”

Scheib said, "I’m honored that I was chosen as a finalist and am very excited that my video has been voted the winner among so many great entries. Given the positive reactions from those who viewed it, I am hopeful that the video can galvanize interest in and action for secularism everywhere."

The video will be featured on the Richard Dawkins website throughout 2012.

Scheib said, “I feel that it's critical for people to get involved. I urge everyone who believes in a Secular America to get organized locally, statewide, and nationally. I hope my video [link], which is rooted in the Ten Point Vision of a Secular America [link], can play a role by inspiring further action. Post, tweet, blog, and share it with your followers, family, and friends. Let your voice be heard."

The living fossils of brain evolution

- - PhysOrg.com 0 Comments

(Phys.org) -- In the course of its evolution, the architecture of the mouse brain may have barely changed. Similar to the tiny ancestors of modern mammals that lived about 80 million years ago, nerve cells in the mouse visual cortex are densely packed in a small area of the brain. However, during the subsequent evolution of larger brains the architecture of the cerebral cortex was radically restructured. This is the conclusion of an international team of researchers led by scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, the University of Göttingen and the Bernstein Center Göttingen. The brains of larger mammals, such as humans, however, have a completely different structure to those of mice. Processes of self-organisation led to the emergence of modules in which neurons conjointly are responsible for specific tasks.
