Thank you so much for being who you are and doing what you do. I have often said that I feel like I'm living in an insane asylum. People like you reassure me that it is the majority of my country is in fact insane and that you and I and the rest of our kind are the sane ones.

I am a retired biology teacher who has for the majority of my life had to be rather discreet about my real opinions about the relative virtues of science and religion and other superstitions. The pressures to conform to the "judeo-christian" mythologies are not superficially obvious but very definitely there and potentially capable of career destruction. They wouldn't dismiss one for being an atheist; it would be for something else.

I am currently reading "The Ancestor's Tail" and "The Selfish Gene" and will start on "The God Delusion" next. I plan to read all of the rest of your books as soon as I can without causing the collapse of the rest of my life.

I celebrate the anniversary of your birth and wish you all the best in your private and personal lives.

Happy birthday to you, Professor Dawkins, from New York City. Thank you for your work and your most recent book, especially. I was already an atheist, (since I was about 20 (while at the Univ of Notre Dame) but this book has made me even more conscious, informed and probing about why exactly I am an atheist.

I want to share a recent experience in which my raised consciousness (I've been an atheist changed how I responded to a religious person. I was recently looking for an apartment in NYC, with an Orthodox Jewish broker. I noticed he shook my boyfriend's hand but not mine. I didn't know why, so I offered a polite handshake as we left after viewing the apartment. The man told me he couldn't shake my, a woman's, hand due to his religion. I was offended, as was my boyfriend. But then there's always the countervailing pressure of the NYC rental market! So we didn't say anything at the time, but I thought about it, and called the guy back and explained we were not going to give our money to someone who is sexist, and that religion gave no reasonable cover to his bigotry. (The man also -- I noticed earlier told me I needed to bring at least one roommate to the viewing, while my boyfriend, having to reschedule for me, was not told he needed someone with him.)

I don't believe there are rights protections here for this sort of matter, but I don't believe I was fairly dealt with in business -- by the visible symbol of "good faith" in business. But I feel I did the right thing that maybe I would not have done a year ago.

Which brings me to one point I would like to raise with you, and maybe you can take it as a birthday gift. There is another very excellent reason to oppose religious indoctrination, which I have been dismayed to see you pretty much gloss over: The three main monotheist religions have perpetuated the dehumanization and enslavement of women, (as well as misogynist mindsets in the West). While you ironically use a berka as a metaphor in one of your last chapters, I don't recall any hard figures, or any prolonged discussion of this in your recent work. You do base the occasion for the book's writing on global instability instigated by mainly Islamic religious fundamentalism (without mentioning America's history of aggression in the Mid East, among other elephants in the room.)

I do hope that you do not forget the day to day direct victims -- prisoners-- of religious fundamentalists -- women, who themselves must be horribly psychologically scarred by a culture of self-hate. They too provide a very important occasion to raise consciousness about the nefariousness of the big three religions, at the very least. It is also ironic, given your emphasis on "feminist consciousness raising" in the 1970s.

I wish that you would raise this point when arguing why it is now so important to deal with religion honestly and bluntly.

So happy birthday and thanks again for your wonderful work.

Thank you so much for everything. For being the public face of atheists everywhere. For fighting the good fight - for reason, for science. The world needs more men like you, especially given the current circumstances in so many countries (amongst them, rather conspicuously, The US) in which religious absolutism rules with an iron fist. It is crucial that the cultural taboo which surrounds atheism be eradicated once and for all.

Here in Ireland, I feel that positive strides have been taken. The Catholic Church is on its knees. Mass attendances are at an all time low, young priests are few and far between. I am glad to state, as an 18-year-old atheist, that I have never faced any prejudice or serious ill-will as a result of my non-belief. Yet, circumstances would probably have been entirely different only a couple of decades ago - and I put the change down to men like you. Men with courage, who will stand up for what they believe in. You are an inspiration, Richard.

You may, very often, be frustrated when faced with the ignorance of which religion is such a superlative font. That, for a man of your intellect, would merely be natural. Yet you have not, and must not, falter. Take comfort in the knowledge that so many of us treasure your input. You are a man of science, and that, in my humble opinion, is the most honorable trait one can have.

I started to read Michael Shermer (having already read Phil Plait's Bad Astronomy book), and he referenced you for myths on evolution several times. So after reading every book he had published up to date, I picked up the Blind Watchmaker, the Selfish Gene, and UnWeaving the Rainbow, and finished them within a week.

My present to you is to inform you of this fact: I came to admire you as a scientist before I was even aware of your spectacularly righteous and developed views on religion and atheism. I have watched his presentations and listened to him debating and between him and Sam Harris they have made things very clear to me.I normally give my books away to the British Council when I have finished reading them but in his case I keep them on my coffee table so that I can re-read them and also show them to any visitors I have. I am sure I would run out of adjectives trying to describe the man. Seriously though, thank you so much for "The God Delusion" and all the work you are doing for humanity. As one who was indoctrinated into the Evangelical Christian community from childhood, I know first-hand the damage that can result from religion. Your book has been an inspiration to me on so many different levels, that, even though I had already left the flock, I can honestly say it has had a major impact on my life.
