Question on Crossing Over

In The Selfish Gene, Dawkins mentions that crossing over before meiosis is a real problem to explain by evolution, but then, he says, the selfish gene theory simplifies it a bit, because a scientist only has to explain why crossing over is good for the crossing-over gene. Fair enough, but then ... he doesn't explain it, leaving me simultaneously curious and frustrated. Perhaps in the 70's there was not a good answer? Can anyone give an explanation or refer me to any literature that does?
