Explaining evolution to a 6 year old???

I need some help. I really really need some help.

Whilst driving my 6 year old son to school he was asking me great questions about dinosaurs. This line of questioning continued for a short while and I was on fairly safe ground. Then the questions started to get a bit tricky "were there people with dinosaurs?" I could field this one - a simple "no" seemed to satisfy. But the follow up was fiendish in its simplicity "where did people come from?"

I was in all sorts of trouble as I pathetically tried to explain evolution to a six year old and drive. My 4 year old daughter (also in the car) asked "is grandfather a monkey?" - "no". "Is grandma a monkey?" -"no". "Is great-grandma a monkey?" ... on and on it went in complete earnestness. I got a headache.

Although I haven't quite got around to reading TGSOE (I plan on giving that to myself as a christmas presant) I can discuss evolution with adults. But a six year old is another beast altogether.

Does anyone have any hints, references, experiences or have their been similar threads, they can share to help with this one?
