Tomorrow evening, Weds 11 May, Richard will be giving a public talk to help raise funds for the Inverness Monster Science Festival.
The full title is 'The Science of Beauty and the Beauty of Science', and this is how the event is being described:
'Survival of the fittest' suggests utilitarian efficiency. But Darwin understood full well that the external appearance of animals was subject to forms of natural selection which are akin to aesthetic choice, for example sexual selection. Is this where our sense of beauty comes from? Including more advanced and sophisticated aesthetic sensibilities? Is science itself among the highest aesthetic experiences?
We thought it might make an interesting discussion topic: IS science among the highest aesthetic experiences a human can have?
