Death penalty or no death penalty?

The conviction of Levi Bellfield has predictably reignited the calls for the return of the death penalty. The question is, can there be room in a morally advanced civilised culture for the ultimate sanction? If it were to return could the authorities guarantee that the innocent would not die? Is there any evidence that it would work as a deterrent or is it simply removing those society wants to wash its' hands of?
What are the moral and practical imperatives for and against the return of killing people in the name of justice?
