From where should atheists draw their "comfort"?

It seems clear to me that the overriding attraction of religion is the promise of the next life. It is always portrayed as better than this one. Promises of reuniting with lost relatives and friends are made that address some of the deepest distresses we can experience.

If you take that away, what can atheism offer as comfort for people who are facing death, disease, deprivation or danger?

I am an atheist, but haven't found a good answer for this question myself yet.
