Mixed messages about music in Islam

In my role as a music and guitar teacher in schools in London with a high proportion of pupils from Muslim backgrounds, I have encountered on numerous occasions the children of Muslim parents coming to me, sometimes in tears, saying that their parents forbid them to either take their guitar into their house or indeed play it at all, at home or school.
I have since tried to discuss this on other websites in an attempt to discover wether music is actually forbidden in Islam and I am getting half saying yes and half saying no.
Typically the more fundamentalist Muslims say it is forbidden and what I take to be more moderates say that it isn't. Naturally it is always going to be hard to get a straight answer from a theist, as they can't agree on anything between themselves, yet somehow expect us all to respect their 'pick and mix' beliefs.
Can anybody here tell me conclusively one way or another and your opinions on the matter?
