Is the UK a Christian country?

Firstly, Its a tricky one as England is more apathetic than N. Ireland and Scotland. Wales may well be less apathetic than England too. However, what constitutes a Christian country?
We have a monarch at the head of the Church of England, but we have discrimination laws that do not sit well with the notion of a 'faith' country.
I ask this as I am concerned as a student teacher, that evolution is not being taught in any of the Primary schools I have worked in so far and creationism is rife. A recent excuse was that creationism is important because we are a Christian country. Of course there is no excuse not to teach evolution, but what about the excuse for creationism? Are we a Christian country? If so what is the significance of that?
