Like a fish needs a bicycle

I like the saying, "A man needs God like a fish needs a bicycle", which Desmond Morris just reminded me of. He and I would both like to trace its origin, which he believes to be a nineteenth century philosopher. There is a feminist parody ("A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle"), whose (Australian) origin is known and much more recent. But if anybody can throw light on the original 'God' version, please share it.
Thank you
Richard
