LeeC.. It was I that posted the comment you answered in 66401, thanks for the input. Your right with regards to physics being fun, As I said the standard model is based on Einsteins theory of relativity which again relies on the universe being both homogenous amd isotropic. A guy called Labini, an astromoner from Geneva made observations in the 90s and concluded that the universe is fractal in nature I believe that these observations have been repeated . The conclusion was refuted by the majority, stating that the clumping of matter seen, was on the larger scale smoothed out. This new observation on a larger scale again (if correct) seems to confirm Labini`s conclusions. I may have repeated myself here apologies if so. Its all so verrry interesting, there is one thing for definate though and thats nobody has the answers yet. again thanks Lee...Tom

The current paradigm is that the universe is both homogenous and isotropic (no not a sports drink) in other words its of equal density all the way through. Einstein came up with this idea in the early 20th C because for one there was no technology to study it in depth and for the other it helped with his sums when describing his theory of general relativity. ALL the current theories are based on this principle from the big bang theory to dark matter and dark energy, the (in my view) latter two being gap fillers to explain anomolies arising in the math involved in the explanations. Since the 80s with better technology smaller holes (massive on our scale) in the universe have been found and these have been explained away as one offs and that the cosmological principle (a homogenous and isotropic universe) still holds true on a larger scale. This latest finding on the face of it disputes that theory. There is another explanation and that is that the universe is fractal in nature and there has been plenty of interesting work done on this by people from the univerity of Rome and others. I believe that over the next twenty years there will be huge paradigm shift in the description of the universe and its creation. And it will not include the use of a creator.

Ewan D..Very good! Corylus, she speaks of jesus revealing himself and speaking to her in first years as a nun. It seems to me that she may have had a schizophrenic episode early on when fully emotionally involved with her vocation, she was a bride of christ and went through all the ritual and truly loved him. For the following years her problem was being ignored by her husband and lover. She still sees christ in the suffering of others or rather christs suffering in the suffering of others, this view was never disbused by the men she went to for guidance instead his existance was reinforced in her mind. She was also in my view a sociopath who evidently would ignore the the pain and suffering of the people surrounding her in the belief that by converting them she was doing sevice to jesus and that after death they would live in paradise forever the pain of this world being transient. Hearing that people feel sorry for and making excuses for Monster teresa makes my blood boil. They should reserve their feelings for the poor bastards that died in pain and misery when they could have been helped by that insane bitch. Their so called mission is still active and no doubt people of all ages are still living and dying in those same conditions. I need a beer, c u Tom

Before any of you decide on how kindly she was or how she should be viewed post mort I suggest you take a bit of time and do some research on the subject. A quick look at famous.y2u.co.uk will give you some idea of the "good" she did never mind what Chris Hitchens has to say about her. Rest in peace mt what a laugh, mind you after living a lie, obtaining money by deception off thousands of people and being indifferent to the religious convictions of others I suppose she deserves a place in heaven. As I have said before she was more interested in harvesting souls like some bloody vampire than alleviating the suffering.

To be frank I don`t give a rats arse about her wishes for the letters, in fact it shows the hypocrisy and the deceit she was willing to indulge in to propogate her belief. At one stage she is praying about bringing souls to him (jesus) like some bloody vampire. It seems her main endevour was converting people, bringing succour to the helpless and dying by converting them to the way of christ... Imagine those poor bastards lying in their own piss shit and pain being proselytised to by some insane old woman... Speaking of hypocrisy I get slight wiff of it from some of the previous postings on this site.

I am not saying that people should not be honoured for their achievements Rushdie is a great writer but royalty in contemporary society is as defunct as the church of England. As for Rushdie if he does not have a jesters outfit for the occassion, maybe Sir Elton John could lend him a dress.

There are areas in the West that are retarded and some where belief in the irrational is the mainstream. As has been previously said, many here would welcome similar laws and some the same punishment. The West needs to keep Musharraf in power in the hope that he and those that follow have the fore sight to drag Pakistan out of its dark age. A secular military dictatorship is preferable to people with this mind set having THE bomb and its unrealistic to think that the goverment can rule without doing some deals with the religious leadership that has the voice of the majority.

Bizzaro Dawkins, If you consider the time those people were born into and the paradigm of the universe and life that was current, none of them were fools. On the other hand if you with access to our accumulated knowledge and current scientific paradigm believe anything of the creed then you at the least inhabit a fools paradise. You seem to be opposed to peoples ridicule of christians as it promotes "more" bitter feelings, So are you opposed to all satire? What about politicians? actors? these have feelings too! To be frank I question the reason you ask that question of yourself on a site like this? Is it something of the martyr or masochistic in you?

I`ve just watched THE WAY OF THE MASTER part 3 on youtube, one of the guys says "If you speak to someones conscience and circumnavigate the intellect the subject (evolution) dos`nt come up." If thats the level of debate in some sections of society in the USA you need people like Bill Maher. I will say no more except "GIVE IT A REST" its getting tedious.

Oy Vay girls and boys, such an argument, over a television personality at that! Mind you I remember such an argument over dinner in a very cultured household, about David Beckham and his wife( He has skills with a soccer ball, friends of that remarkably great actor of yours Tom Cruise I believe ). It ended very poorly, with me being Knocked over in a bout of fisticuffs with the hostess. However, I hope Mr Maher arouses the same level of debate amongst the theists. I also like the word apatheist it describes most people I know.
Comment #35445 by pissinintothewind on April 27, 2007 at 7:19 am
I`m a Brit and have never heard of Bill Maher, I am of the opinion that whatever his reasons are for making a documentary, its importance lies in the fact that the message will be spread through sections of the society that have no interest in scholarly debate, or even in reading books. As they say, "Any publicity is good publicity." From my observations,in the USA you have one massive struggle on your hands and you need every tool (pun intended) in the box. More strength to his arm my friends.

I think there is a lot of uncalled for reverence of the so called musketeers bordering on personality worship. I applaud their leadership and devotion to the rationalist cause we all promulgate, however In my view it will neutralize some of our efforts if we are not conscious and allow this "meme" to take hold. It should not be encouraged, an example of this were the e mails sent from this site asking and encouraging people to send Dr Dawkins birthday greetings. Why? I can see why some theist call this a religion as much as personality worship can be called a religion and I think its very negative .I realize this may upset some but there it is. TOM.
