1. Floods are judgment on society, say bishops

That's an interesting point re: insurance companies. They routinely classify damage resulting from irregular natural events as "acts of god". There was quite an interesting and amusing film about this a few years back starring Billy Connolly as a fisherman whose boat was destroyed by a bolt of lightning, so he sued the church.

This needs to be publicised more than it has been just for its sheer absurdity. The clergy probably could exert a measure of social influence over the populace of simpletons back in the 16th century by invoking the idea of natural phenomena as the vengeance of God on human sinners, but in the 21st century it is surely the case that most people will look at this ridiculous attempt to frighten people into line and simply scoff. He might as well have put a white sheet over his head, waved his arms around and went "WOOOOOHHHOOOOOOOOHHHH" !

3. Dawkins says religion is 'like sucking a dummy'

Julia Neuberger and Roger Scruton, eh? I can well understand if those two got RD's back up. The religious "gene" is in all of us, indeed. What utter cobblers.

Dawkins quotes someone in TGD (I'm afraid I can't remember who - it may be Mr Harris - answering Rabbi Sacks' central point beautifully. "There always have been and always will be good people doing good, and evil people doing evil. But for good people to do evil, it takes religion."
