I've got a suggestion. Upon getting ahold of one of these crispy christ crackers.... feed it to a friendly parrot. Polly wanna cracker? I'll bet he does. I imagine this won't be too offensive but gets the point made. Anybody got any other ideas?

Miss you, Carl.

Comment #159549 by shemp333 on April 12, 2008 at 1:18 pm
I have almost always found Bill Maher insightful, witty, and quick on the draw in most debates. He does his homework, and therefore usually defends his positions quite well. Besides that he's absolutely hilarious. What is up with the hatred on the guy? It just doesn't add up. His show Real Time is the best discussion format on TV. Politicians. Actors. Writers. Activists. All uncensored. The guy is a one of a kind original and isn't scared to speak his mind or ask any question no matter how controversial. How can you not love this guy? Disagreeing with him on a topic is one thing, personal attacks are another. Drop the negative attitudes dudes. Dawkins was a delight on the show, as was Hitchens. I can't wait to see Ayaan. Great show Bill. Rock on!
Haters, go stuff yourselves.

Peacebeuponme,
It was a liberating move... I think its a funny story too and wanted to share it. My mother and I have laughed about it many times since. Before my temper tantrum my dad and I used to sneak out during the offering to rush home and watch the Three Stooges, which were on at 11:00 AM Sunday mornings. Mom was in the bell choir and never saw us sneak out. I learned so much more from the Stooges than I ever did in that sanctuary. Soitenly!

Comment #152532 by shemp333 on March 31, 2008 at 7:48 am
No one ever forced my head under water. Thankfully I was stubborn enough as a child to refuse to go through it. In the church I was forced to attend you had to put on a white gown and the preacher baptized you in a tank behind where the pulpit was. (They moved it for this) Everyone in the congregation got to watch as you were dunked into the church.
I believe I was 12 or 13 at the time and having arguments with the parents about why I had to attend this church and what I was "being taught". I was and am quite pleased I refused. I had to sit and watch all the other kids go through it....
That year was when I refused to ever be taken to church again. My mother said, "Get up! Time to go to Sunday School!" I told her, "I refuse to get up, I refuse to get dressed, and I'm not going to church ever again!"....
and I haven't been back since. (I'm 34)

Carl Sagan's books are soooo good it is hard to say which is best. Pale Blue Dot, Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, and The Demon Haunted World are my favorites. Contact the book is far superior to the movie and I also recommend. He had such an incredible talent for conveying the complex in easily understandable language. I got to meet him at Penn State many years ago. The man is Legend.

I talk to him as if he was an adult, without modern knowledge. The response has been amazing. He seems to respect me and responds in kind. Just a tip. Maybe he's just good stock, but he does not appreciate being patronized. I will have a real influence on his development, I'm sure. And I sure hope to!

We need to see how the words of science are being used against it, and evolve literally and accordingly. I think Clive Thompson makes an EXCELLENT point here! What can the scientific community do to counteract these obviously misunderstood (intentionally or not) phrases we are using.
32. Why Science Will Triumph Only When Theory Becomes Law
Comment #88067 by shemp333 on November 14, 2007 at 1:26 pm
Sounds like a concept way past its due. My question is, what process is there in science to upgrade a "theory" to a "law"? My ignorance of how this happens is very real. Anyone with a history lesson to give some background? It looks as if we should already be calling it the Law of Evolution. If that's the case, is it just a poor choice of words in regards to the "Theory of Evolution", or is there a way to gather a consensus to change the title? I do believe this change of title would be significant if gone through the proper procedure (and media).

Generators are everywhere in the large bases. No soldier goes without electricity unless they are out on a mission. Downtown Baghdad is without electricity for Iraqis unless they have a generator. This is one of the huge complaints residential Iraqis have. Under Sadam, they did have power. Now they have it only 1 or 2 hours a day, if that, and that's at night. Imagine 130F heat and no AC or running water. As terrible as that is, as soon as they have gotten the power up in the past, some asshole bombs it. What can you do? Very sad.

I love this idea you had of documenting your progress of thought. Myself, I can't say I ever was a believer. But I will never forget the moment that it became so. I was 5 or 6, and as a child I was fascinated by dinosaurs. There are hundreds of pictures of me as a child with toy dinosaurs in my hands. I knew all the names. Then in Sunday School, I was first told of the Bible. This is the story of how the world began, and included everything. I will never forget hearing the story of Genesis, and everyone being asked if there are any questions. My little hand was the only one to go up.
"What about the dinosaurs?"
A couple kids snickered, and the teacher laughed a little and moved on. I never understood what these people were trying to get me to understand from then on. As a teen, I came to understand that the misunderstanding was not in me. It was in what they were collectively indoctrinated to believe. I have always had a mind inclined to science and mathematics. I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
