If anyone is interested, Judge John E. Jones' written opinion in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District can be found in pdf here:

or html here:

I don't think it makes any difference to anyone here, but it certainly helps credibility elsewhere that Judge Jones is a conservative Republican appointed by G. W. Bush. After the release of Judge Jones' ruling, Bill O'Reilly immediately attacked, accusing Jones of being a fascist and an activist judge. Can you imagine what he would have said had the judge been a liberal or even moderate Democrat?

Coyne's article reminded me the science teachers at Dover left the classroom while the assistant principal read the mandated disclaimer about biological evolution to their students. I don't know if the teachers experienced any repercussions from their rural community for their mostly unnoticed act of courage, but it sure wouldn't surprise me if they had. Does anyone know if there exists a forum for high school teachers to share the pressures and frustrations some may experience at times over teaching evolution. If none exists would this be a good place to sponsor one? Maybe the Richard Dawkins Foundation could somehow recognize a high school teacher or teachers who show courage in the face of the criticisms many of them must surely face for teaching good science. It wouldn't necessarily have to be an award, just some kind of recognition.

Curiously, the Amish school shooting that occurred on October 2, 2006, at West Nickel Mines School here in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania is missing from the map. The shooter was Charles Roberts who wasn't Amish but was home schooled in a Christian environment. (His Mother works at Sight and Sound Theatres, a Christian organization that stages Bible plays in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, and they take Bible stories literally.)

Very nice interview. Unfortunately, here in the US I think most folks will be exposed to Dr. Dawkins on either the Colbert Report or The O'Reilly Factor.
