It just goes to demonstrate how stupid religious fervor can be, I think most of us would agree. However, that applies to every non-Muslim religion as well. The world would be a much more sensible place without any religion.

My own exprience (an inordinate number of confided atheist friends and acquaintences) leads me to believe that there are far more atheists than generally believed but that they play along as believers to avoid rocking the social boat. As more people begin to show that it is acceptable to be a non-believer, I think that we will see a snowball effect as these closeted athiests reveal themselves.
