1. Bible Theme Park Faces Opposition in Tennessee

Comment #180772 by amanda marie on May 15, 2008 at 6:33 pm

Fuckin-god-damnit, was it too much to hope that the "opposition" mentioned in the headline would be from my fellow Tennesseans who may be smart enough to find the idea of a Bible Park repellant?

Who am I kidding?

Ugh! Viewers be warned of a brief but close view of smallpox! Goddamn it, I'm itchy all over! I can't handle skin things! Fuckingoddamnit.

Also, Stein needs to be throttled.

Last evening in college algebra, our octogenarian instructor sweetly marvelled at the mathematical strides taken by all those "old Greek fellas" in 300 BC. My classmate chimes in: "Yeah, they invented lotsa stuff in the Renaissance didn't they?"

My eyes nearly rolled right the fuck outta my head.

The vast majority of people with such strong opinions of our character (as amanda marie apparently does) that I have encountered actually know very little about us and are running with the caricature that has been handed to them by somebody else. Whatever.

Kelly, I don't have a strong opinion about you guys & I didn't intend to be abrasive in my comment. It's just that where I tend not to wince at the spokespeople active in our freethought/humanist cause, I tend to do so when exposed to the RRS.

And as far as basing my opinion on a "caricature that has been handed to [me] by somebody else" - I subscribe to your Youtube broadcasts, have visited your website, and have watched/heard you guys on interviews. I've given RRS a chance and have only decided that the way you present yourselves doesn't appeal to me.

Again, didn't mean to abrade anyone

Maybe I'm alone in this but I really dislike the Rational Response Squad.

They seem like the gloomy high school jag-offs who show the glimmering potential of maturing into the pals you'll likely make in Physics Lab five years from now. But for the present they'll only inspire groans and eye-rolls with their constant tirade against the "establishment" (their parents).

I don't know. Am I being too hard on them?

6. War in Heaven: Hitchens Meets D'Souza on Home Turf

I'm not familiar with this Douche D'Souza character but it truly gets my goat that he's most likely gloating right now over his perceived "victory" over Hitch. He's prolly got his feet propped up, sipping some milk, and thinking, "That guy's gonna accept Jesus Christ into his heart now and it's all because of my debating prowess." I wish I could punch him.

Holy Mackerel.
I'd be curry to hear how our dear Sam Harris feels about having directly inherited the throne of "village atheist" from none other than Chairman Mao!*

*(see cover of The Return of the Village Atheist by McDurmon above for evidence of Harris's newfound and esteemed pedigree)

The wildly blatant misrepresentation of Dawkins's statements (or Harris's or Hitchens's, for that matter) isn't some latent trend - it's the only course available to a religious person when confronted with something as inarguably practical as the lack of belief in the supernatural.

No Believer will ever Ever win a debate with a Nonbeliever and they know this very well by now. Their only option is to skew our words into something with which they can weakly spar, in hopes of putting up the appearance they're saying something subtantive. It's so very pathetic, really.

"I fail to see how the mating habits of the Borneo headhunters relate to religion."

I think Harris was referring to the sacrifice being intended for a god/godess of love or procreation. I can see how it seemed a propos of nothing but I'm assuming that's what he meant.
