2. The Science of Religion and the Religion of Science

Comment #200564 by Andr3w on June 27, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Dawkins and Pinker are among my favorite intellectuals, its a great windfall to hear them both speak at length on religion.

3. Carlin on Religion

One of the great comedians of our time, George Carlin was the man.

5. Richard Dawkins on The Big Questions

Was not Jesus Christ killed for this crime of blasphemy? How ironic is it that blaspheming a blasphemer is blasphemous.

Another brilliant article by Hitchens.

11. Heath Ledger Death: Baptist Group To Protest At Memorial

Comment #115761 by Andr3w on January 24, 2008 at 4:23 pm

Every time the members of the Westboro Baptist Church say or do anything they strengthen the secular movement while simultaneously caricaturing Christian fundamentalism. They are the best players on our team! They represent everything that is wrong with Christianity in America. With each hateful and ignorant protest they stage they wear away at the credibility of the evangelicals. They should keep up "The Lords work", and show everybody what it means to be a true believer. They always seem to know exactly what God hates, and who deserves to burn in hell.

I'm born a sinner because the rib woman and the dirt man ate a forbidden apple. Now the only way to escape the eternal torture (which i rightfully deserve solely for being a descendant of apple thieving fore bearers) is to suspend my disbelief, lean not on my own understanding, and hand over 10% of my annual income to church so they can spread this nonsense to even more people.

13. Sam Harris debate with Rabbi David Wolpe

Comment #108544 by Andr3w on January 7, 2008 at 6:57 am

Harris clearly dominated this debate from the outset. Rabbi Wolpe seemed to base most of his arguments on obscurantism, slippery slope fallacies, non-sequitor fallacies, and special pleading.

Sam did a great job of highlighting the common ground that Jews and atheists share with regards to the skepticism of Christian dogmatism, and the dangers posed by radical Islam. The Rabbi was decisively pinned to the mat on most of the topics debated. Wolpe was put in a position where he had to deemphasize the religious hatred of the German Jews by the Nazi's in a vain attempt to legitimize religion in general.

14. God rest you merry atheist

Bah! Humbug! Holidays, like religions, are nothing more then blatant human contrivances. That being said, I do like the food, music, and customs of many holidays. Who doesn't like prolonged feasting, excessive alcohol consumption, flashing lights, ornaments, and decorated boxes of free stuff with your name on them? It is what it is.

Merry pagan celebration of the winter solstice.

I would wager that a significant proportion of Americans foster similar notions about Jesus.

LOL, brilliant! Lets also chop down a tree and decorate it for Jesus.

17. What is the role of free will to an atheist?

Comment #98855 by Andr3w on December 14, 2007 at 6:19 pm

Freewill is nothing more then a threadbare illusion. However, is civilization possible without certain limitations being placed on freewill?

18. Sam Harris at AAI 07

Comment #82523 by Andr3w on October 26, 2007 at 2:46 pm

Do we need a label in the first place? I think a strong case can be made that we don't. If we all unite under one banner, and call ourselves "label X", won't that make it easier to marginalize and vilify us collectively? If we call ourselves atheists, we will incur a legacy of hatred and mistrust that has been cultivated by religion for millennia. We will be, in effect, agreeing to be reviled and castigated by the faith-head majority. What can we possibly gain from this?

19. Sam Harris at AAI 07

Comment #82514 by Andr3w on October 26, 2007 at 2:11 pm

I think Sam made some great points here. Why accept a label that has been both created and defined by religion and demonized by religionists for so many centuries. I don't like the idea of having a label that defines me solely by my opposition to religious dogmatism. I am anti-superstition, anti-religion, anti-dogmatism, anti-faith. But i'm also pro-education, pro-science, pro-choice, pro-reason, pro-separation of church and state. Surely there is a better label than atheist that comports all these ideas.

20. What's Good About Religion?

Comment #82506 by Andr3w on October 26, 2007 at 1:48 pm

Pat Condell is brilliant and funny. He's like an older, and more cynical Christopher Hitchens. He makes regular posts to liveleak.com.
