Goblin, Mr. Dawkins never said he "believed" in the existence of intelligent alien civilizations like people believe in God. He said they were highly probable.
3. Panel discussion on atheism where no atheists are included
Comment #20804 by jefferson on February 6, 2007 at 5:00 pm
That was disgusting. This is NOT a Christian nation. There is a seperation of church and state in the USA (there's supposed to be one, at least). All of them ignored that fact.

"Wake up America from your accelerating descent into intellectual and moral chaos before it is too late"
Believe me, I wish I could just wake up and have all the religious people cured of their mind virus.
Did you see that video? No wonder it's so hard to reason with religious people (not only here in the US). They leave no oppurtunity to change their minds even if they are proven utterly wrong.
6. Interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson
Comment #20151 by jefferson on January 31, 2007 at 3:45 pm
That was a fun interview. I too was dissappointed that it was so short, but I watch the Daily Show... well... daily, so I know the interviews are generally brief. Sometimes when really famous people like Bill Gates comes on, they give them more time.

Funny how Mr. Kasich accuses Brian of manipulating kids. Indoctrinating kids with irrational beliefs is manipulating! Brian is only trying to release them from their indoctrination, if they haven't released themselves already.

9. Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With New 'Intelligent Falling' Theory
Comment #17992 by jefferson on January 17, 2007 at 9:22 pm
A brilliant piece of satire by "The Onion."
I swear, religious folks WOULD deny gravity if the Bible said it was actually God holding everything down, calling it "just a theory." Or others like Francis Collins would say gravity was the work of God.

I'm against the death penalty, although I have to admit, I didn't exactly lose sleep over Saddam's death.
"His mind would have been a unique resource for historical, political and psychological research"
That's a very good point. I hadn't thought about that until now, and now that he's mentioned it, I'm a little bit more dissappointed that Saddam was hanged.
13. Divided by a common language: Richard Dawkins clarifies his position
Comment #15678 by jefferson on January 2, 2007 at 1:20 am
I hope that one day we will have complete seperation of church and state all across the world. That can be done through legislation, but to end private indoctrination of children, we would need to shift the moral zeitgeist even further forward. Eventually, I hope that society will condemn brainwashing children, and thereby ending that deplorable act without government legislation that would violate civil liberties.

Comment #15209 by jefferson on December 29, 2006 at 2:30 pm
I read Mr. Muehlenberg's review of the God Delusion from NotWithoutMyMonkey's link. Muelenberg labels the book an intolerant polemic against religion. I just finished the book myself, and it is actually a very gentle, nonchalant laying-down-of-how-it-is.
I've read books attacking the likes of George Bush and the fast food industry that is a hundred times more scathing than Dawkin's book.
I think Muelenberg needs his pacifier.
15. A Christmas thunderbolt for the arch-enemy of religion
Comment #15050 by jefferson on December 28, 2006 at 1:55 pm
Oh, I can think of plenty of good secular reasons not to burn down my neighbors house. What I was talking about was what goes on inside the brain while you are feeling a sense of wrong and right. I say blaming that on God does not explain anything, and would actually retard progress into finding a real scientific explanation.
16. A Christmas thunderbolt for the arch-enemy of religion
Comment #15046 by jefferson on December 28, 2006 at 1:16 pm
Blaming morality on God, to me, is terrible thinking. It means "well, I don't know. Let's just blame it on God and leave it at that." There is a scientific explanation for morality. It just hasn't been discovered yet, unfortunately. At least Mr. Dawkins proposed a reasonable hypothesis. He didn't just say "God did it! Mystery solved." And before you even make that claim, you would have to prove the existence of God in the first place.
17. 10 myths - and 10 truths - about atheism
Comment #14967 by jefferson on December 27, 2006 at 2:35 pm
I don't know... I kind of like seeing non-atheists argue on our boards. I only start to hate it when they become ridiculous on a David Matthews level, or the libellous peter123 or whatever his name was. I think it would be kind of boring if it were just atheists talking amongst themselves. I enjoy the occasional argument with theists. I have a naive hope that maybe we can pin them against the wall and get them to admit that they are delusional.
Thing is, I don't think that they see themselves as being trolls. What they are arguing, to them, is the truth. But as long as they don't go completely off the rail, I'm game for a go.

Yes, Mr. Mark. The religious people sometimes make me feel embarrased to be an American as well. I have a feeling when foreigners think of Americans, they think of religious people screaming "We're (Americans) #1!" and holding rallies for bullshit issues like homosexuality and abortion. And I get lumped in with them:(
"Do virtues matter as ballast in a dynamic, complex society? If yes, where will they come from? Do secularists simply expropriate them from religion? Or do they create their own, such as "do not oppress"?
This guy is another nutcase who thinks all good virtues come from religion.
Anyway, someone I know showed me this link. It contains excellent quotes from excellent people... Not!

Comment #14309 by jefferson on December 22, 2006 at 2:06 am
David, I have a problem with God.
How did he create matter? He certainly didn't just use magic. If he really created matter, there should be a scientific explanation to how he did it.
How did he form? Creationists like to say "you can't get something from nothing." Well, God IS something. How did he come from nothing?
Using the "God created the universe" explanation reminds me of the explanation that Earth sits on a turtle's back. What is that turtle standing on? Oh no, it's turtles all the way down! So who created God? Oh no, it's Gods all the way back!

"Jefferson I take your point but let's see you walk the walk."
Firt, let me tell you I haven't even denied the Christian God yet, let alone the Islam one. So, I'll kill two birds with one stone:
I deny the Christian God as well as the Islam one, Allah.
Why do I lay my "soul" on the line? To prove a point - I think it's ridiculous to believe in gods. Even if there was a loving, caring god, I don't think he would dump innocent humans into a lake of fire to roast for eternity just for not believing in him. What a pile of rubbish! That is a ridiculous notion. I suspect it is just a way to scare people into believing. If God was real, he should have way more to worry about than a bunch of kids denying him, considering he has totally fucked up the planet.
Comment #14153 by jefferson on December 21, 2006 at 9:42 am
Peter, we are atheists. We don't believe in ANY gods, including Allah. I believe most of the people posting blasphemy videos are from countries that are mainly Christian, therefore it seems logical that the Christian God is the one they are denying, but it doesn't mean that they believe in the other ones.

I have a response to Mr. Mcnally saying that people who criticize Mr. Bush are accused of being Bush haters.
And who are those people saying people who critisize Bush are "aiding terrorists" or "Bush haters"? I don't think it's a stretch to say they are Christian/conservatives, once again thinking with their gut instead of their heads. This is just the same kind of retort they use when someone criticizes their religion, except in a different wrapper.

"Dawkins and Harris' take-no-prisoners orthodoxy would have us be intolerant of others' faith."
I don't see what's wrong with criticizing peoples' belief.
You would never hear someone calling a Democrat "intolerant" if one were criticizing a Republican.
Nor should an atheist be called "intolerant" while criticizing a religious person.
I would love it if we shattered this taboo.

My goodness. Mr. Jacoby thinks that without religion, our morality will deteriorate. I'd love to test that theory out. I'm not going to run around raping and pillaging just because there is no god. I doubt that fellow atheists feel differently. We have something called common sense.
This assertion that religion has the moral highground, talk about condescending. And they like to call Mr. Dawkins and other atheists that.

It's so very nice to visit this site after I went on a Christian message board. Here is the post that stuck out the most for me:(the poster was responding to someone seeking answers for three questions)
"I can see how you would trip. Those questions can be hard when you're put on the spot. (not being sarcastic)
Here's how I would answer them.
Where do you believe we came from?
God
What do you think the purpose of life is?
God
What happens after we die?
God"
It's really sad that this is the kind of advice some people give to others. It obviosly explains nothing.

Shaun, maybe you'll finally learn the truth when your God doesn't come. God is the product of our imagination.
Imagine something similar: I worship money as a God, and I'm waiting for a million dollars to manifest out of nowhere and drop on my lap someday because I read in a book that it will happen. It is obvious that it won't happen. Same with your fictional God.
