1. IT'S A GODDAMNED CRACKER!

OK, you're right: the reactions (death threats and all) need to be criticized. And forcefully.
I'm just not sure this is the way to do it.
We know what irrational belief can do.
We should point out that our Christian cultural "buddies" are getting themselves in the same waters as the "muslim fundamentalists".

Take religion seriously and you're in trouble..

PZ (and others): I think you are overreacting.
Let's take a step back: Religious people are in a kind of love relationship with their god and their community. They consider certain things special, even sacred. For example a wafer. It's not at all different from people taking other symbols sacred (hey, it's just a (wedding) ring; hey it's a flag that I'm buring; hey, it's just this or that memento).

Things mean something to people for totally personal and/or emotional reasons. You should understand this.

For the same reason, Muslims get upset when drawing the prophet, etc. Is that a problem? Of course it is. But is it new, anything to get upset about? No. We have people in love with their faith/god. That means those people are not rational. Can we now move on and see what we can do about it? (other than insulting them).
As atheists we have a serious PR problem.
Let's work on that as well.

3. Get out of here, atheists!

Nice coincidence: Over 400 children taken from Texas polygamist ranch!

These must have all been atheists, right?!
No? What? Latter Day Saints!? Ah, the wrong Christian sect. Right. Whatever.

Did anybody see the AGGRESSIVE GOOGLE ADVERTISEMENT?
Wherever I browse these days, I see ads for the Expelled propaganda movie.

Not to mention the money they offer to schools for having kids watch the evil propaganda...

6. New Atheists Are Not Great

Comment #145779 by bawruss on March 18, 2008 at 6:16 am

D'Souza is evil by his own standards.
Just watch him scream his stuff in the debate with Dennett.

I felt bad for Daniel. A toxic and deluded hysteric like D'Souza needs a dry dose of Hitchens to chill out.

Dennett is better against fair-playing opponents.
D'Souza is a serpent (sorry for alluding to Genesis.. it's still in our culture ;-)

Until recently I didn't know about Sir Attenborough, other than he was on the book cover of a book I got at a book fair. The book: Life on Earth.

Then I got a hold of his documentaries via Netflix.

Now my 5-year old and I are huge David Attenborough fans! You gotta see those scenes mentioned in the article. Truly amazing!

8. Cutting Edge: Baby Bible Bashers

Now you know why Richard calls this child abuse...

It's natural (and maybe already in our genes) that we want are children to be similar to us.
But there ought to be limits.
Why? Well, check this video out... and Jesus Camp...
And it's not just Christians of course.

Sad state of the world. Good that the New Atheists are pointing out that this is NOT OK.

9. Math Religion Trouble

This is just fantasy mathematics. In my view a high proportion of currently published papers in mathematics, dealing with things like Hilbert Spaces, are as pointless as medieval theologians discussing how many angels could dance on the head of a pin.

Not sure what current papers on Hilbert Spaces focus on, but the concept seems quite practically relevant (from Wikipedia):

Hilbert spaces arise naturally and frequently in mathematics, physics, and engineering, typically as infinite-dimensional function spaces. They are indispensable tools in the theories of partial differential equations, quantum mechanics, and signal processing. The recognition of a common algebraic structure within these diverse fields generated a greater conceptual understanding, and the success of Hilbert space methods ushered in a very fruitful era for functional analysis.

Apologies to my American friends.
But this country has become the laughing stock of the civilized world.
Good night Texas.

11. Should Science Speak to Faith? A dialog between Lawrence Krauss and Richard Dawkins

Comment #47274 by bawruss on June 3, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Science will destroy religion within the next 15 years.

Not so fast. That's wishful thinking!
Recall that natural/evolutionary explanations for religion exist. Religions are mostly not about what is true (rationally!) but what feels good / right.I have little hope they'll ever go.But sure enough we could use much less of the extra-toxic forms that are currently so widespread..
