1. Vote for the Time 100 - Are They Worthy?

Comment #34989 by sankekorafi on April 25, 2007 at 8:52 pm

Wow... seems like 6000 people are voting on Rain per minute (hyperbole alert).

Seriously though, if RD's on the top 100 (which seems likely right now) it will be a great thing. If he's in the top 10 people will take notice, but be too worried wondering who the hell Rain is to think about it too much. How can someone be influential if he's not very often heard of? Seems like many people on this list are of that sort.

Of course, the King of Thailand I've heard of, because my boyfriend is Thai... but I don't expect everyone to think about him more than every time he shows up in the news...

2. Where Is Atheism When Bad Things Happen?

Comment #33269 by sankekorafi on April 19, 2007 at 7:02 pm

I commented on the Article:

As many have already pointed out, we atheists don't come running in because we think everyone should be given the space to mourn as they please. This is the worst moment to come in and try to convert people to ANY cause, religious, nonreligious, or irrelevent to religion. And whatever we atheists find to comfort ourselves, it has nothing to do with god and religion at all. Why should we say something about atheism here, when what we really turn to has nothing to do with atheism? We should express our sympathy for the families and friends of the dead, along with the entirety of Virginia Tech on this loss.

Incidentally, look on any atheist blog or forum in america and you will find our reaction to these events; our horror, shock, and sympathy.

3. Religion and Politics

OOh hot topic, Theravadin Buddhism. I totally misunderstood my atheist boyfriend when he told me he was spending two weeks as a Buddhist monk this summer in Thailand. But it's exactly as said above. Indeed, he does not believe in karma or reincarnation and most Buddhists, of any sort, don't believe that nirvana is something that needs to be sought in this lifetime (ie, it doesn't make sense in terms of my boyfriend's views, but in other more religion like parts of buddhism it is acceptable to be more secular in some lives until you are ready to reach nirvana... a fine idea for someone who is in politics.)

sir_russ,

The link that I used was at the end of the article where it says: Send a Note To CNN. Thank you for your comments on my e-mail!

The homepage now reads that Richard Dawkins is actually going on Paula Zahn TOMORROW!

I think we made our point loudly enough folks. Thank you Richard Dawkins!!!

CruciFiction,

I got that too... and I answered it by saying I hope they still read my message and that I felt it was important that they read it.... who knows though.

Luckily, somehow, of the people I know who follow the news at all about half of them get it exclusively from internet sources (usually multiple) and Comedy Central. The Daily Show and The Colbert Report both treat atheists the same way they treat the religious. And that's fine with me.

This whole CNN thing is... gross.

Did someone say they had a response from someone? What did they say?

8. Panel discussion on atheism where no atheists are included

Just sent this to CNN:

The recent discussion about atheism was offensive. I cannot be convinced that anyone in the discussion knew anything about atheists at all or what our concerns are or, in fact, about the founders of our nation (many of whom were suprizingly NOT Christians ie. Thomas Jefferson and George Washington). I think it is shameful that not a single atheist was on this panel to defend our position. I highly recommend that CNN request someone from American Atheists or the Center for Inquiry to refute this recent non-debate where the bigotry against atheists (while denied by the members of the debate) was firmly and disgustingly demonstrated.

9. Panel discussion on atheism where no atheists are included

Well, I read the transcript. If you're looking for the interesting stuff, it's the last part of that article. But the most interesting thing on there is how evenly reviewed everything but the atheist debate was. The other discriminations were looked upon with some sympathy or were split into sides, but no one wanted to take the atheist side here... and certainly no one really understood our viewpoint or even considered it.

It is so depressing to see that such a view is deeply held by the media. Even the Jewish member of the debate said that America is a Christian nation.

And yes, there IS freedom FROM religion.

I sent my e-mail. I hope they get a ton: more atheists than they knew existed!

At any rate, I made the point that no person who actually believes in the holy spirit would say otherwise for the sake of a DVD and that the teens they call subverted are actually already atheists, and that they are giving comfort to a group of teenagers who think that if they come out everyone in their circle of friends, family and society would, in their mind, turn against them. I also pointed out that they have perfectly good communities themselves so the should let the nonbelievers have our own. But then, I don't think everyone will agree with everything I said... lol
