1. Fury at funeral songs ban

Comment #211162 by dazzjazz on July 15, 2008 at 2:37 pm

ah - the warm hand and heart of the catholic church.

I live in Sydney and we're beseiged by this cult this week - what a joke. And our govt gave 'em $80 million.

2. Debating creationism in Louisiana schools

Comment #191740 by dazzjazz on June 11, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Where do these right-wing religious groups get all these dorky white men from? I though he really evaded the accusations. The woman was correct to point out the existance of good science standards in education and that there is no need for a religious group to stick its nose in when they have no science credentials!

Best of luck with the bill.

So glad these people are on the tails of these IDiots.

4. 'My daughter deserved to die for falling in love'

Comment #179098 by dazzjazz on May 12, 2008 at 2:31 pm

re#37

That video is scary! Who are these barbarian hordes we've let in to our countries? I respect them as human beings but I totally disrespect their beliefs and behaviours.

Years ago I thought it was best to leave the entire Middle East as a glow-in-the-dark car par but I know that's an immoral thing to do.

But, how can we possibly hope that these people can become civilised? Western Countries open their doors only to have them piss and shit all over the place.

5. Does science make belief in God obsolete?

Comment #170282 by dazzjazz on April 27, 2008 at 2:47 pm

I really enjoyed the article by Pervez Amirali Hoodbhoy. A very well thought out argument - I shall try to check out his book.

6. Anti-Quran Film Fitna Pulled From Web Due to 'Threats'

Comment #152312 by dazzjazz on March 30, 2008 at 4:59 pm

What a shame - fuckwits win again. I approve of the film - it exposes Islam for what it is.

7. Seven new deadly sins: are you guilty?

Comment #141495 by dazzjazz on March 10, 2008 at 2:09 pm

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that "immediately after death the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into Hell".

Prove it and I'll believe by lunchtime of the day!

8. Richard Dawkins' US Tour begins this week

Comment #138485 by dazzjazz on March 4, 2008 at 12:34 pm

Another vote for RD to come to Australia. We need help getting rid of a stupid institution called the Hillsong Church - evangelistic dummies!

9. Leaving the Faith

Comment #136307 by dazzjazz on February 29, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Sam's definition of happiness is similar in very detail to that of Eckhart Tolle's The Power of Now and A New Earth. I wonder if he's read them.

I think those books are largely westernised repetition of Buddhist ideas - something Sam has studied in great deal.

10. Turkey in radical revision of Islamic texts

Comment #135018 by dazzjazz on February 28, 2008 at 12:54 pm

"But this isn't a religious ban. It came about because in the Prophet's time it simply wasn't safe for a woman to travel alone like that. But as time has passed, people have made permanent what was only supposed to be a temporary ban for safety reasons."

Nice to see SOME reason for a change. Still much work to be done before they realise having millions of people believe and take on one persons spiritual experience is stupid idea.

12. Bill Maher on Larry King Live

Comment #125473 by dazzjazz on February 11, 2008 at 12:18 pm

Well spoken, Bill, esp the line about how jesus would handle it. I just wish there was more from LKL.
Looking forward to the film.

13. Hitchens and Boteach Debate on God

Comment #125031 by dazzjazz on February 10, 2008 at 6:42 pm

Boteach comes across as a cretin and Matt's comparison with D'Souza is spot-on. Boteach didn't make sense at all. Just goes to show the mental gymnastics required to be a rabbi, priest, imam etc.

Well done Hitchens! Did Boteach buy your 100 books yet?

14. Sharia fiasco

Oh and thanks for posting the background info it really helps.

15. The New Atheist Movement

Comment #123068 by dazzjazz on February 6, 2008 at 12:26 pm

I love the propaganda nature of this!
Likewise the happy image of the nuclear family walking hand in hand - yeesh these people are so apple-pie hokey that I wanna puke!

16. Richard Dawkins on The Big Questions

Comment #117922 by dazzjazz on January 30, 2008 at 1:51 am

Gosh, Richard didn't get much of a look in did he?
I did like his question to the Archbishop - "Where are the secular schools?" (or similar)

17. Islam in Europe

Comment #114616 by dazzjazz on January 22, 2008 at 1:27 pm

I love listening to Pat Condell. As I live in Australia, some of his references to European events and statistics are lost on me. I'd love to see him take his rants a step further and provide some kind of footnotes. I know it's anal but I'm just wanting to learn!

Go Pat!

18. Sam Harris debate with Rabbi David Wolpe

Comment #108059 by dazzjazz on January 6, 2008 at 12:39 am

I don't see a problem with Sam having taken on some of the best bits of Buddhism. I think he's right to talk about suffering vs happiness - it cuts to the chase of the human experience. For those who are unaware, Buddhism is not a theistic religion, at least from my experience. I did study it for a while but there wasn't enough evidence for some of the central claims for me.

Sam is my intellectual hero! Bravo for staying so calm.

20. Daniel Dennett Debates Dinesh D'Souza

Dinesh is a total moron. I will never listen to one of his facile "analogies" again.

21. Why Science Can't Save the Republican Party

Comment #93255 by dazzjazz on December 2, 2007 at 2:13 pm

Yet again the theist choose the greater of two evils and shot themselves in the foot!

22. Romney's Mormonism is fair game

Comment #89685 by dazzjazz on November 21, 2007 at 1:42 pm

I think there is one too many instances of the letter "m" in "Mormon" !!!

23. Why Science Will Triumph Only When Theory Becomes Law

Comment #88176 by dazzjazz on November 15, 2007 at 4:23 am

@Heretic Chick

Here in Australia we have a Dept of Education that sets the curriculum. I'm amazed that some committee would get to do that at the local level!

25. Onward Christian teachers?

Comment #87556 by dazzjazz on November 12, 2007 at 12:54 pm

For a brief time, I taught at a so called "Christian College" which offered "degrees" but I couldn't stand the lack of standards (incredibly low entrance requirements) and had to quit. I felt like I was teaching in a sheltered workshop (no disrespect intended). The students were not of Bachelor standard or intelligence and had been admitted because they were deemed to have potential by people who held similarly worthless degrees from other pathetic institutions. THe students were incredibly unmotivated, presumably spending their time praying to jesus for help!

26. The Year of Living Biblically

Comment #84881 by dazzjazz on November 4, 2007 at 2:45 am

The media player doesn't work for me on that site. Does anyone know if the video lives anywhere else?

27. Debate between Michael Shermer and Dinesh D'Souza

Comment #80396 by dazzjazz on October 21, 2007 at 4:03 pm

I had to turn D'Souza off - he wasn't answering the question as far as I could tell.

30. Larry King Interviews Kathy Griffin

Comment #71814 by dazzjazz on September 19, 2007 at 5:52 pm

PS - I'm sick of censorship in general. If you're offended change the channel or write a letter but get over it...

31. Larry King Interviews Kathy Griffin

Comment #71812 by dazzjazz on September 19, 2007 at 5:51 pm

Despite the fact that she's an annoying Yank it's about time someone took the piss when it comes to thanking God at these awards shows - so I approve of Kathy.

32. Oxford's Christian colleges 'are not suitable for school-leavers'

Comment #71806 by dazzjazz on September 19, 2007 at 5:38 pm

"Halls could risk losing their Oxford University licences altogether if they teach a fundamentalist Biblical doctrine on sexual ethics and in other areas of theology."

Well that's the most sensible thing I've heard all week! No more faith schools please...

33. The Sacrifice of Reason

Comment #66584 by dazzjazz on August 30, 2007 at 2:03 pm

Re: Comment #66322 by Richard Morgan

Richard, you've managed to offend me. You're inferring I'm some kind of unthinking hero worshipper.

Far from it. My comment was brief simply because I don't have the time to rabbit on at length.

At least I know whose comments to skip over now.

34. Teresa, Bright and Dark

Did I read this correctly - is Hitch anti-abortion?

35. The Sacrifice of Reason

Comment #66284 by dazzjazz on August 29, 2007 at 3:26 pm

Gosh, Sam's final sentence is so HEAVY! He really says it all right there.

PS If you haven't checked out Penn and Teller dish the dirt on Mother Theresa - it's both enlightening and hilarious.

36. Scientists should unite against threat from religion

Comment #64995 by dazzjazz on August 22, 2007 at 3:19 pm

I wonder what made Collins surrender to Jesus instead of one of the many other 'offerings' on the celestial smorgasboard? Perhaps the waterfall had frozen in the shape of a cross and was melting tears of blood?

37. Bill Maher Making New Documentary Movie, 'Religulous'

Comment #64547 by dazzjazz on August 20, 2007 at 4:27 pm

Wow, that Amanpour doco looks amazing. I get the feeling that the atheists side is really really on the rise - let's hope it continues and gets rid of religious nonsense.

38. Richard Dawkins and the New Age fakers

Comment #63930 by dazzjazz on August 16, 2007 at 7:08 pm

Wow - just watched part of EOR on Google.
Great program with solid arguments. As a former practicing Nicheren Buddhist, my ears pricked up when the program began with the chant I used to do! I wonder if he'll go after them in part 2

I don't like to preach intolerance but jeesh the stuff I heard on this video is very scary indeed.

Sorry for going off!

40. These preachers of hate must be exposed

Comment #63407 by dazzjazz on August 14, 2007 at 4:56 am

I just saw part of the video. Why do these Muslims want to live in the West? Why don't they all go back to the M.E.

Gosh their ignorance makes my blood boil!

41. The Flea Circus Invites a Newcomer!

All right! It's going on my email footer pronto!
Via a link on this website I got a great bumper sticker - "TOXIC", where the T is the cross, the X is a star of david and the C a crescent moon!

Lucky I don't teach at a christian college any more...

To Deja Fu,

Perhaps Richard can use his new found fame to get the copyright owners to release that font!

I don't like it much, but I do think it's important for us to rally around some symbol for the medium term.

44. Interview with Ayaan Hirsi Ali

Comment #56882 by dazzjazz on July 17, 2007 at 4:15 pm

This is the first time I've seen Avi Lewis and I think he's a non-journalist. What an incompetent interview. He blew a great opportunity to go into any depth - is his show always so tabloid? He should have devoted to entire show to her, not five minutes, and then done some serious research.

45. Debate between Sam Harris and Chris Hedges

Comment #50706 by dazzjazz on June 19, 2007 at 2:50 pm

I wish Hedges had responded to Harris's death blow "Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence." Game over.
I agree with another user here, who said Hedges was defending his own personal version of religion.

46. Christopher Hitchens on The Hour

Comment #49613 by dazzjazz on June 12, 2007 at 2:47 pm

Great to see another interview with Hitch.
Unfortunately that CBC media player is dogdy - talk about stuttervision. I'm on Mac here - anyone else have those problems?

47. For the God Question, a Biological Perspective

Comment #43772 by dazzjazz on May 22, 2007 at 2:34 pm

I am really hopeful that the book and the others by Hitchens and Harris will change the zeitgeist. I've read TGD twice now and it was very illuminating. Unfortunately I think that the very people who should read it won't, possibly because their pastor told them not too. It is amazing to hear Dawkins & Harris quote and discuss all the nasty bits of the bible - I wasn't told about those at catholic school! Very telling how organised religion chooses the bits it wants - to quote Sam Harris "Either it's a magic book, or it's not."

48. Jerry Falwell's Hit Parade

Comment #42039 by dazzjazz on May 17, 2007 at 2:02 pm

This "man's" small mindedness knew no bounds. His behaviour and attitudes were very un-Jesus-like.
