1. Richard Dawkins' US Tour begins this week

Comment #138000 by Crazymalc on March 3, 2008 at 6:12 pm

That's great, but why not head over to South Korea?

TGD delusion has been released here, both in Korean and English and there are a whole swag of Fundies over here that need to hear the message!

For example, the world's biggest Christian church - The Yoido Full Gospel Church - recently invited that charlatan Benny Hinn over.

I am seriously annoyed that I missed the show as I would of been handing out pamphlets!

4. Interview with Neil Shubin, author of 'Your Inner Fish'

Comment #112622 by Crazymalc on January 17, 2008 at 3:09 pm

I love this interview.

Colbert has a great ability to make people look like idiots (See the d'souza interview for example).

Shubin does a great job at talking about science in a fascinating and interesting way.

Well done that man!

6. New attempt to end blasphemy law

Comment #109770 by Crazymalc on January 9, 2008 at 4:37 pm

What is interesting about this is that they are legalizing "sin'.

Maybe the Catholic Church could take not and relax it stance on condoms.

Because, of course, promoting sex outside of marriage is sin and sin in bad.

Much worse than AIDS, war and famine

Keep up the good work.

There are those who did nothing, and posted nothing.

And some of us who donated and did not post.

Ayaan
I hope my meager offering helps to keep you safe.

Prof. Dawkins is right. You deserve a Nobel Peace Prize.

Why on earth would you need a compass pointing to Mecca? So you could prostate yourself and pray mid trip? A little dangerous to do while you are driving methinks.

Reminds me of my flight on Brunei Airlines and the similar level of stoopidity:

The Maori were NOT conquered. They signed a treaty in 1840 with Queen Victoria's representatives granting them the rights of British citizens. International law has forced recent goverments to acknowledge this and redress past wrongs.

Hi Shuggy,
As a (I assume) fellow Kiwi, I agree with almost everything you said. Very astute comments as well.

As yes, there was the Treaty in 1840. There is also the small matter of the NZ land wars though. The Maori put up a good fight to start with, but soon succumbed to colonial might. Large areas of land were confiscated and all native schools closed down.

This is a different type of conquering to other areas, but it is still conquering.

To NZ's credit though, we have gone a long way to addressing these past wrongs.

*sniff* *sniff* Just my two cents

Crazymalc The guy on the right of the cover is Martin Amis.

Thanks! Why is he there though? I read his entry on Wiki and noted that he is a good friend of Christopher Hitchens, but I can see nothing in his writings that would clasify him into the "New Atheists" in the way that Dennett et. all are.

Can anyone shed any light?

31. Italy's Padre Pio 'faked his stigmata with acid'

Comment #81438 by Crazymalc on October 24, 2007 at 6:01 pm

This sort of claim is easy to dismiss.

One Pharmacist saying that he gave him some acid is hardly a convincing agrument that he faked his stigmata.

Not the same as your experience, but did you realise that overseas Aid money from both the US and Australia (the only two countries to my knowledge) bears the caveat that no Aid money is to be used on contraception, abortion clinics or female reproductive health education?

Yup. A lot of pissed off HIV/AID workers in Africa over this. As if the epidemic wasn't already hard enough...

A good letter too.

Putting a rubber sheath on is so much worse than keeping a superman in the sky happy.

I saw a lot of this sort of shit while I was volutneering in Africa. Not all from the Catholic church either.

USAIDS - a U.S. funded agency - goes for the abstience approach, mostly due to the religious right in America leaning on George W.

Such a waste of life.

And then of course there are idiots like this guy:

34. Does fundamentalist religion cause the rejection of evolution? or is it the other way around?

Comment #80222 by Crazymalc on October 20, 2007 at 8:27 pm

I think it's counter-intuitive to accept that the theory of evolution is counter-intuitive

*nods in agreement*

I think Prof. Dennett was quite right when he said in Darwin's Dangerous Idea that Darwin had the greatest idea of all time.

Greater than Einsten, Newton... and so on because it is so damn simple!

It is not complicated like quantum theory, or the theory of relativity. You don't need any high level math to understand evolution.

39. The Religious Right's New Tactics for Invading Public Schools

Comment #77588 by Crazymalc on October 9, 2007 at 7:25 pm

Didn't Daniel Dennet suggest that the proper place of religion in public schools was to teach it as a course of study? If we teach the tenets of Christianity and Islam and Pastafarianism, and look at the effects of relgion on society, and ask questions about where the religious impulse come from, we might see some serious thinking about the subject.
I think there is great value in getting religion into the public school system - not to promote it as truth but to hold it up as an object of study. When people begin to look at religion from outside of the bubble it quickly becomes apparent how silly it is.

Yes, he did. And it is a most brilliant idea.

41. In honour of Dan Dennett

Comment #76775 by Crazymalc on October 7, 2007 at 8:04 am

Dan Dennett is a personal hero of mine also.

When I read the topic of this post I thought that is was going to be a In Memoriam.

Darwin's Dangerous Idea was quite literally a life changing book for me. I was Born Again Boy and become Agnostic Boy after some personal tragedies. Dennett's book cemented my Atheism and allowed me to get on with life. Still scared, but at least I had the truth on my side.

Thank goodness for Dan Dennett

42. Scandal brewing at Oral Roberts U.

Comment #76380 by Crazymalc on October 5, 2007 at 4:42 pm

Twenty years ago, televangelist Oral Roberts said he was reading a spy novel when God appeared to him and told him to raise $8 million for Roberts' university, or else he would be "called home."

Oral Roberts makes it sound like a bad thing.

God: "You better do this thing for me or I'll send you to eternal paradise"

Oral (tee hee): "Ok! Ok! I'll do anything, just don't send me to heaven!"

I agree with the others here in that the reporters (esp. the guy) never got the irony.

And I love the way the leader of campus group was called "Captain".

I mean, the FSM, is not real and everyone is just pretending that it is real.

45. Christianity's Image Problem

Comment #76107 by Crazymalc on October 4, 2007 at 6:17 pm

On the flip side, Christianity is on the rise here in South Korea. Estimates range from 26-49% of the population. (definitions are always problematic).

Korea has a Buddhist past and it is only in the last few decades that Christianity has really took off.

47. Logical Path from Religious Beliefs to Evil Deeds

Comment #75284 by Crazymalc on October 2, 2007 at 8:33 am

There is no logical path between Atheism and "good deeds".

I agree.

I think the best way to look at though is to start from the Secular Humanist point-of-view, which states that (according to Wiki):

Secular humanism is a humanist philosophy that upholds reason, ethics, and justice, and specifically rejects the supernatural and the spiritual as warrants of moral reflection and decision-making.

The atheism flows from this.

The moral implications etc also flow from the Secular Humanist point of view.

So, I would call myself a Secular Humanist first and an Atheist second.

Any morals I may claim to have came from the first thing, not the second. (Waves to C.S.Lewis)

It is also a useful P.O.V. as it enables to positively identify yourself, as opposed to defining yourself as something you're not ("I believe in no god").

There is a logical path from religious faith to evil deeds. There is no logical path from atheism to evil deeds

Very succinct and clear. Thank you Prof. Dawkins

Atheist response to that: If the religious are serious about that, they've got to update their holy books. They must delete the bad laws, or publish an authoritative document eschewing the bad laws.

Very well put Dr. Benway.

49. Atheists arise: Dawkins spreads the A-word among America's unbelievers

Comment #75208 by Crazymalc on October 2, 2007 at 3:52 am

Come to Korea Prof. Dawkins! I'll buy you some shabu-shabu!

The religious right here is outta control. 1 in 20 people in Seoul go to one church, called the Full Yoido Gospel Church. (About 40% of Koreans are Christians.)

Yoido fully endorse this book as the literal word of God:

http://www.crazymalc.co.nz/2007/Sep/16Sep/16Sep.htm

which I think - see abovee review - is incredibly damamging for a host of reason.
