I'll have to check out this "RichardDawkins.net" that he recommends at the end of the Talk video.

Cultural Relativism is a tool that scientists (such as anthropologists and historians) must use in order to properly understand other cultures. In that (the proper) context it is a good thing.
When people on the "left" start to use it as Richard said to put down science (and other Western ideals of the Enlightenment), then they are full of (you know what).

It's not at all clear who they are going to debate—there's nothing about it on Brian Flemming's weblog, nor is it mentioned on the Rational Response Squad page. Perhaps they will debate each other?

As soon as I saw this, I knew I had to write about it. It's hillarious!

Thanks everyone! Glad you're enjoying them. I think the next two episodes will be a real departure. Takin' some big risks here, so stay with me. B

I know this is going to look like I'm tooting my own horn, but since I wrote a lengthy post about this last week, I think it's just easier if I link to that post.

If you get nothing else out of it, you need to follow my link and read Sean Carrol's post re: the Overton window. It's actually about Dawkins' TGD, but the exact same argument applies to the blasphemy challenge.
RICHARDDAWKINS.NET OVERLORDS: If you're reading this, you should feature Sean's post on your front page. It's here

9. William Crawley meets Richard Dawkins
Comment #23302 by The Science Pundit on February 27, 2007 at 5:55 pm
Crawley really tried to go after him with tough questions. I just love the way RD had an answer for everything. I know I couldn't do that.

Sam said:
"I have met literally hundreds of western educated men and women who are convinced that their favorite yogi has magic powers. I remain open to evidence of such powers (and my openness has exposed me to a fair amount of abuse in the atheist community)."
I don't know if I would characterize it as abuse--more like cynical snickering. I can't really comment on it myself since I haven't yet read anything by Sam where he speaks about Buhdism. I'd like to think, though, that even if I strongly disagreed, I wouldn't be a member of the "abuse" camp.
11. Evolution Debate - Pigliucci vs Hovind

Really the best way to debate someone as irrational as Kent Hovind is to sink down to his level.

Check out Massimo Pigliucci's blog:

(Also the Hovind link above is screwed up, but I don't care because I'd rather link to Pigliucci.)

Carol,
Your story really moved me. I have to agree with all your friends who found Eric's secular funeral most heartfelt--I've always felt that religious mumbo-jumbo detracts from solemn or joyous (ie. weddings, etc.) events.
For a long time, I've told people that if I were to die young, I would want to go doing something that I loved. From what I've read about Eric, it sounds like that's the way he went. I realize that that's not much consolation for you and the others he left behind, but there should be some comfort in knowing he had a good (albeit short) life.
I truly feel your pain. You are strong and brave.
Keep up the fight,
Javier

Sam Harris is correct about everything. Religion is the root cause of sexism."
Did you read the same article I did?
"Some of this sexist evil probably predates religion and can be ascribed to our biology, but there is no question that religion promulgates and renders sacrosanct attitudes toward women that would be unseemly in a brachiating ape."
16. Atheist Richard Dawkins on 'The God Delusion'

The preacher RD was refering to in the interview is Fred Phelps. He is one of the most evil SOB's out there. Check out his confrontation with Michael Moore.

17. Discussion of The God Delusion
Comment #17954 by The Science Pundit on January 17, 2007 at 5:08 pm
I couldn't make it all the way through. It was too frustrating.
A) It was all drivel.
B) They obviously hadn't read the book.
C) They kept attacking a strawman Dawkins (strawkins).
D) It was drivel.

19. Round Table Discussion with Richard Dawkins
Comment #4619 by The Science Pundit on November 4, 2006 at 9:53 pm
Luther, Sapient:
I was also working on converting the .wmv to a .mov file, but it looks like you guys have it under control.
Riley:
I think you're misunderstanding what everyone was saying. Margaret and the RRS are outspoken atheist activists; it would be totally hypocritical for them to attend a baptism. While I'm sure they would like it if every atheist followed their example, I don't think that that's what they're advocating.
It is similar to the way Professor Dawkins' words are misinterpreted. When he says that Darwin's theory of Evolution by natural selection led to his atheism, he's not saying that that will happen to you too (although I'm sure he wouldn't mind). I believe that if more people learned what Evolution was really about and hence had a better understanding of science and critical thinking, there woud be less religion. But not everyone will come to that conclusion. I'm just as perplexed as Dr. Dawkins at how intelligent Biologists like Ken Miller and Francis Collins can be theists. But that's the way it is.
And as for your first post, I did listen to the roundtable again and nothing I heard was as impertinent as the tone of your posts. Sorry.
