1. Pope's Views on Science Invoke Spirited Debate

Comment #165306 by papavb on April 21, 2008 at 10:11 am

"One obviously got the very distinct impression that the cardinal really did have a regard for science,"

If the pope "had regard" for science, he would abolish the Catholic Church.

2. Richard Dawkins' secular army must be stopped. God is behind some of our greatest art

Bah!

This is probably the most flaccid piece of apologetics I've yet to come across. Beyond the ignorance the author displays of the person he's criticizing, he fails to cook up anything novel.

Of all the people who want us to revere the daydreams of dead sunbaked mountebanks, this I-dont-believe-it-but-we-best-respect-it-lest-all-of-society-flounder-into-the-roiled-brine-of-rapine-and-despondency, is the least humorous, most nebulous, and ultimately boring and nettlesome type.

p.s.: sorry for rambling on, it's 2 am and I'm half-asleep

4. Debate: Ayaan Hirsi Ali vs Ed Husain

Interesting, I would have thought that they were in concurrence, but maybe it's the strident atheist in her yawning at the moderate.

I hope you mean heroine, one little letter can make you into a needlewhore.

anyways, I agree wholeheartedly, more things like this need to be said on tv, by people who aren't reticent out of fear.

more power to her

Was I the only one who found, catholic thinking oxymoronic?

I hope some legislator runs this policy to its inevitable ad absurdum conclusion, a veritable clusterfuck of zaniness taught in all schools.

The Apollonians and the Mahometans will finally get along! Odin's prophecy is fulfilled!

And don't forget how his poison fangs came out after the Vermont Tech shootings.
(I was lurking the site when that went down)

I can only assume you mean Virginia Tech.

the only thing being shot in Vermont is probably a bottle of delicious maple syrup.

In support of steve99's assertion, I think a quote from Sartre is in order

"If god exists, man is not free, and if man is free, god does not exist"

you're either a fatalist, or you're not

10. Griffin's 'offensive' Emmy speech to be censored

Comment #69531 by papavb on September 11, 2007 at 4:17 pm

She's a fervid atheist alright, and thank god for that speech. The charge for defamation doesn't hold up, she's not talking about believers, she talked about god and his son(aka himself) Jesus. Bill Donahue is a waste of carbon, he never has anything relevant to say, ever.

One funny thing about the pro-lifers, is to notice that their opponents, aren't the pro-death people. I would assume no one here would choose abortion as the first solution to any such question, and quite literally throw out the baby with the bathwater. A certain amount of discretion and deftness in these matters is required, and I would feel somewhat uneasy comparing unborn children to X's and potential X's. The choice doth lay with the mother when it comes to it though.

Great article, we need more learned discussions by honest folk, because these questions really do affect us in public and private arenas.
