Comment #175981 by kintaro_crab on May 6, 2008 at 10:10 am
@ #2, yes I too do not understand why there is such a wide range in definitions of what a gene is. It makes total sense to me to include the regulation factors as a part of a gene. Not to mention why does their definition of a gene not include non-coding regions of the DNA?
Perhaps someone knows a good answer to these questions. Is it just out of convenience?
Would love to know.

Wow, how revealing. This has to be the best interview I have heard dealing with expelled. I think the editors at Scientific American really put Mathis to the task. What a sleazy lying scumbag.
I especially liked them calling him out on that age old creationist saying, "I am not a scientist but..." then present false facts to back up their false conclusions.

I found it interesting that the author stated that as a child he had a 'passionate interest in the church'.
Years back, as a child I was forced to attend Sunday morning and night services, I can only remember excruciating boredom, hunger "food wasn't allowed inside", and the glaring eyes of disapproving church members, who would talk behind my back while I would draw pictures all over the sermon program I was given.
Now as an adult I have an unquenchable anger at my wasted Sundays, sitting in a church where hate and bigotry was taught every week, and is still being spewed forth from that same pulpit. I cringe when my father tells me that he wishes that Huckabee had been the Republican candidate.

We've heard the statements many times over the past few years: In less than five years something like 90% of all scientists and engineers will reside in Asia, American workers will not be able to compete with the best in a global economy, and the United States has begun to implode.^_^Fixed Thankyou

Comment #146246 by kintaro_crab on March 18, 2008 at 8:12 pm
hah, I hate these stupid nonsense studies (Social Scientists lol). I would go so far as to say that Christians, who most likely made up the largest percentage of those surveyed, are mostly lairs.( e.g. Discovery Institute). So they definitely would lie on a survey asking them if they are "happy".
quote: "our analysis suggested that religious people suffered less psychological harm from unemployment than the non-religious."
My conclusion on this is that, Religious people don't fully understand the position they are in. They are so self deluded that they are happy to leech off their governments and the people around them.

I think it is much more highly likely that the Israelites never roamed the desert and Moses never existed, considering there are no records from Egypt of any type of mass Exodus.

Comment #129095 by kintaro_crab on February 18, 2008 at 4:00 pm
I'm going to have to disagree, as it was an ad hominem.
Internet grammar bashing comments are ad hominem. Perhaps you grammar bashers could go over to PZ Myers blog and let him know of all the grammar/spelling mistakes there.
The original topic was to show a difference between troops vs soldiers, and not against misspelling soldiers or using the word soldiers in a complete sentence. Sorry, but my grammar and spelling are not reflective of the views I put forth. It's up to the reader whether or not he/she wants to take my comments seriously. You can say I have bad manners, but I stand by my statements made about internet comments.
As for some of the people who would share the good womens views that only reading books and talking to people solves the problem. I would like to say that I know a lot of Christians who only read the bible and only talk to other Christians. Why do you think that the Mormon church and the church of Scientology forbid their members from viewing certain internet websites. I remember listening to an interview with a former prominent member of the Mormon church "I think it was on Point of Inquiry". During which he stated that one of the biggest reasons for the decline in membership within the Mormon church was that the young people were finding real information about the church over the internet.
There is a lot of misinformation in books, misinformation in people, and hell misinformation on the internet. i was just defending against the absolutist statement that we can't learn things from the internet. We need more sources of information, not less.

sorry but using a plural word like troops to describe soldiers still is not a big deal. Why don't you explain why it is such a big deal instead of making a random incoherent reference to George Orwell.
To Big city,
If this was an important document and not an internet comment i would have proof read it and cared about my grammar and spelling. Ever heard of Ad hominem.

Comment #128998 by kintaro_crab on February 18, 2008 at 1:12 pm
Ya I'll second that Mitchell Gilks.
What was the point in talking about language? Troops vs. Soldiers, and that thing about folks. Is this really a problem? Sounds more like a conspiracy theory
And her mentioning kids with short attention spans due to not being read as a child, I would definitely argue against this forget about TV do kids really watch so much TV now days? I guess you could have made this argument for children born in the 70's and 80's but what about all of the kids that spend their time in front of computers on the internet learning things. I would be a complete country idiot without the internet and computers. What does she think parents would read to there children bible stories , humpty dumpty...
And lastly she said
"We can't learn the things that we need to know from a quick hit on the Internet to see the latest person making a fool of themself on YouTube. We can only learn the things we need to know from talking to each other, from books. And we all need to do a lot more of that."
Really so all of the podcasts, debates, science articles, talk origins, this site richard dawkins, The science network's beyond belief, great videos on you tube showing the irrationality of religious people around the world, and all the online lectures are quick hits on the internet that we can't learn anything from! Don't get me wrong I'm not saying books and talking to people are obsolete, they definitely are not. But to dismiss the internet like that as a source of information I call Bull Shit.
Well I'll end the rant part there, now on to the positive.
She has a point the general American populace is irrational but I don't think she proposed any methods to fixing this problem.

you forgot this part where god decided to create an alternate universe where man comes before the beasts and fowl.
"
Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Gen 2:18 And the LORD God said, [It is] not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
Gen 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought [them] unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that [was] the name thereof."

Comment #127058 by kintaro_crab on February 14, 2008 at 9:21 pm
I was amazed at such a poor hypothesis about where religious fundamentalism comes from
"its not religion that causes fundamentalism, fundamentalism is the traumatic experience of Globalization on country's which are deeply poor very very unequal politically humiliated and powerless"
So basically what this says is that being poor and being powerless leads to fundamentalism. If that were true then why are so many affluent westerns fundamentalists.
I really don't agree with her use of the word globalization. It seemed more like some sort of political move to demonize globalization as if it were something to be afraid of.
27. Feb 12th: Happy Darwin Day!
Comment #126294 by kintaro_crab on February 12, 2008 at 10:40 pm
Today was a great Darwin Day.
At the lab this morning my fellow co-worker/lab assistant who is an avid Christian. Whilst in a conversation with me brought up evolution (what a coincidence too, she had no idea that today was Darwin Day) but to my dismay she made the usual claims such as: there are no transitional fossils, Scientists can't be certain of anything, you can't trust science..... etc. etc. Mind you this was actually coming from a foreign "Korean" undergraduate studying biology I just always assumed that she was like Francis Collins/split brain but I was totally wrong pretty depressing huh.
I told her about the transition from land animals to whales, Tiktaalik, the numerous hominid fossils, the genetic evidence such as lactose intolerances in populations without domesticated cattle or herd animals, bacterial evolution and resistance to antibiotics, speciation in plants and micro organisms, and gave a pretty good defense of the scientific method telling her about how science is self correcting through an example that I am currently working on experiments to figure out whether or not a proposed autoecious life cycle for the fungus puccinia psidii in a Brazilian journal is actually correct by reproducing their experiments.
I think that I made a really good impression on her and perhaps she might use some critical thinking and go home and look up some of the things I told her to check up on. But I'm not so sure about that, she did also tell me that the bible was written at the creation of the earth to which I replied "aaaaa 4.6 billion years ago!?" and that I should read the bible to learn about dinosaurs. meh...
On another note I paraded around the university campus in my Richard Dawkins Atheist out t-shirt as a celebration of Darwin Day and to my victory over Christian Pseudo-Science.
It seemed so fitting for a Darwin day

30. New atheists or new anti-dogmatists?
Comment #117216 by kintaro_crab on January 28, 2008 at 12:23 pm
I agreed with everything except the last paragraph. I do not see why religion and dogmatic faith are two separate entities.
I can see though that the author most likely has a different definition of religion from my own and this goes into a type of semantics problem
from Webster online dictionary: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/netdict?Religion
1 a: the state of a religious b (1): the service and worship of God or the supernatural (2): commitment or devotion to religious faith or observance
2: a personal set or institutionalized system of religious attitudes, beliefs, and practices
3 archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness
4: a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith
the way a dictionary is set up is that #1 is the original meaning of the word where clearly religion has to do with a deity, #2 also has to do with a deity. numbers 3 and 4 have to do with faith and get rid of the deity part but also are similar but not the original meaning of the word religion.
I think we need to stick to the original meanings of words get rid of numbers 3, and 4 and stop generalizing the meanings of words or this problem with semantics will continue to flourish while people are actually referring to the same things and arguing over nothing.

I thought that the debate was excellent. The only thing that i would have changed is that when the rabbi made the statement that societies based on irreligious ideas are failures, i would have automatically countered with the first amendment of the the American constitution and compared it to the ten commandments in particular the first. Then force him into a corner to answering the question as to whether or not America is a failed society.

Anyway I came out about my atheism to my brother two days ago. My family and brother are fundamental Christians. I was very surprised that he listened to what i had to say compared to my mothers reaction of crying and telling me i was going to go to hell when i told her i no longer believed in Christianity four years ago after which she and i stoped talking to each other "wonder how she would have reacted if i told her i was an atheist now lol<- reference to the joke by Julia Sweeney"
