I've just started reading this thread so I don't know if this observation has been made, sorry if it has
If we take Mikhail Gorbachev
Like Stalin he was/is an atheist
Like Stalin he was/is a Russian/Soviet citizen
Like Stalin he was a Communist
Like Stalin he was a Communist Leader
Unlike Stalin he was not a mass murderer he won the Nobel Peace Prize
And then ask the faith head what make of that
I'm hoping that someone can confirm my assumptions. I'm not great on Soviet politics and history

Done, I posted the following
"Religion is not so much under attack. It's, when faced with reason, asked to prove itself by giving evidence it has nothing to fight with. Except sticking it's fingers in its ears and yelling "I believe"
Religion is used as a tool by cynical politicians who don't believe in god to get the gullible to vote for them. Statistically there has to be more than one atheist in Congress.
When you compare the beliefs of the religious with the facts, religion is small, pathetic, restricting. The more you learn about nature, science, history, art, philosophy, mythology and the cosmos, the more inspiring life is.

I've read Robert Spenser's book "The truth about Muhammad" what he has to say about the history of Islam and Muhammad is very similar to Hitchens. The book falls apart at the end when he gives a summation of what needs to be done about Islam. Given that he is a right wing catholic the rhetoric is not unexpected, but toned down more than I thought it would be. Having said that I would still recommend it as it will probably cover ground that Hitchens does not and Spenser for the most part only uses Islamic sources.
As for the Qur'an, which I've also read recently, it is a joke. Hitchens and Spenser cover it's absurdities very well.

Nastler – Yes, the Greens are pro-independence. If they highlighted this and their secularism more, this could be a vote winner for them

"The absence of a Christian or religious party is unusual," The way that most mainstream parties are chasing the religious vote, there is no need. This is leaving a democratic deficit The Greens are the only truly secular party that I know of.

If you are buying a copy of The God Delusion at a bookstore, before taking your copy to the check out. Take out the bookmark and put it in a copy of the bible, and for good measure put the Bible in the horror section

God is just as lazy, he didn't even finish his creation and made a pretty botched job of it as well. We have nebula that he didn't turn into systems, planets that should have been suns but forgot to light. Some of the suns he did light blew up. There are asteroids smashing into planets ruining the décor. Galaxies colliding and too much stuff is disappearing down black holes. What a slipshod job

2) Atheism is responsible for the greatest crimes in human history.
Hitler, Stalin, Mao and Pol Pot's regimes were totalitarian, and since they were totalitarian could have no form of opposition in their one party states. They didn't arrive at atheism through rationalism or humanism you simply weren't allowed to be a member of any other organisation other than the Party or believe in anything but the Party doctrine.

Where in the Bible does God tell Adam/Moses/Jesus, or anyone else, about Intelligent Design? Sorry Theists but if it's not in the Bible you don't get to believe in it.

Jonathan Sacks:
"We know that child sacrifice was incredibly wide spread in the ancient world, we know that from every kind of archaeological evidence. Child sacrifice which is referred to many many in the Hebrew bible as the most abominable of all acts, was the kind of thing you expected a God to ask of you, it's what gods regularly asked for their devotees. The essence of the story of Abraham is that at the critical moment God says "Stop - I am not that kind of god"."
Oh yes he is
Judges Jephthah,
29 "And Jephthah made a vow to the LORD : "If you give the Ammonites into my hands, 31 whatever comes out of the door of my house to meet me when I return in triumph from the Ammonites will be the LORD's, and I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering.".
34 When Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah, who should come out to meet him but his daughter, dancing to the sound of tambourines! She was an only child. Except for her he had neither son nor daughter. 35 When he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried, "Oh! My daughter! You have made me miserable and wretched, because I have made a vow to the LORD that I cannot break."
