Somebody should throw those fools off the building. Then we'll find out exactly how fun it is.

...And don't forget to take away the sheet. Idiots.

So just keep trying, and keep praying harder!

Eventually you'll prove yourselves right, or more likely, you'll run out of children and your whole nation will be eraddicated in a single generation because of faith.

C'mon lads! Let's hitch up our pants, encourage these psychos to really test their faith and kill off their next generation!

Aah the joys of reading well-balanced, rational responses from my well-thinking and enlightened peers.

Yeah those people are really uneducated compared to us, let's hope they die horribly for it!

This is exciting stuff! Yet more evidence. Still it seems from the responses that people are more concerned with IDiots believing it, then being excited about the fact itself.

But why would anybody care if Creationists and IDiots are going to buy it? As if it makes it less true if they don't... Who gives a damn if they believe it? Denying it is like denying an oncoming freight train, the jokes on them.

Speaking from The Netherlands; nope. But they did step up on enforcing the minimum age for buying cigarettes and alcohol in the supermarkets the last few years. Still, there are plenty of other ways to get it.

There's something funny going on in this thread. Some posters seem to have an idea about what Galileo would want, if he would have cared, if he would allow his body to be exhumed if it was for scientific purposes... Please tell the number of the heavenly hotline to Galileo. I'd love to have a chat with him too.

Anyways, I don't really see the point. Although it is biologically no more then a heap of bones, it is still the remains of a once human. No need to go rummaging through it for no serious reason and I can't really see any...

Hahaha yes that would really make things alot easier and it would separate the fundamentalist idiots from say, my next door neighbours. And like you said, I really think that secular modern muslims are much more up to the task to secularise islam then someone like Mr. Wilders. We need people on the inside to make the change. After all, if some fundamentalist told me I need to get more spiritual in life I'd think "Yeah right..." but if someone like Sam Harris would advocate it, I would at least be inclined to listen to his reasons and think seriously about it. The same aplies to secular and fundamentalist muslims as far as I can see.

Well... I wrote a long response to your post HunterZolomon, but for some reason it has not been saved after I clicked the Submit button. Very annoying...

In short; I think a quote like "Muslims should burn their Kuran's if they want to stay in Holland" is a good example of how Geert Wilders is not helping in any way by targeting every muslim instead of the ones that he should be fulminating against. If he would, like you said, target only the biggots then I would be in agreement with him.

I find that http://www.expatica.com/ is a good (and objective) source of Dutch news in english, so form your own opinion.

Comment #133884 by Nighttripper on February 27, 2008 at 2:10 am

It's a sad thing that Geert Wilders (our own rightwing populistic political bigot here in Holland) is taken so seriously. He has been screaming about banning the Kuran in the Netherlands and has declared that all Muslims should tear up their Kuran if they want to stay in Holland. He is not some heroic freedom-of-speech fighter, he is the kind of guy that wants freedom of speech for himself, but not the other guy.

Our government has already spent months writing up plans about what-to-do-if-all-hell-breaks-loose after Wilders will release his film WHICH NO ONE HAS SEEN YET.

Warnings have been issued by middle-eastern governments that relations will be seriously worsened if Wilders will publish this film WHICH NO ONE HAS SEEN YET.

Now the Pakistani government has blocked the entire YouTube because maybe, this film that could be posted on there (you know, that film THAT NO ONE HAS SEEN YET) will offend some muslims.

It would be hilarious if it wasn't so serious.

Geert Wilders is a racist bigot. The way to deal with such figures is to smile and ignore, NOT to take seriously and start banning. It only adds to his reputation and it is exactly what he wants.

My thought exactly. And how naive it is to allow muslims (or any group for that matter) to legally devise their own way to settle a dispute in front of an agreed third party "as long as both sides agree to the process".

Do you really think that the woman will be allowed to make a different choice then "judgement by Sharia law" when she finally has accumulated the courage to declare her desire to divorce (with a big chance at being ostracised by her familly and community for the rest of her life).

Firstly, despite repeated attempts by many people, I still haven't heard an answer to the Hitler and Stalin argument that makes me go, "Ahhhh, yes! That's it! At last the killer refutation."

I thought the refute: "How long would you think someone like Dawkins, Hitchens or Dennet would survive in a facist or stalinistic society" covers it pretty well.

Those regimes were the pinnacle of dogmatism, the very same thing that people like Dawkins, Hitchens or Dennet are fighting against.

I was circumsized (twice actually... eeeep) as a
baby, and am somewhat glad for the greatly reduced infection risks (not the STDs, obviously one should use a condom for that), but don't know if I'd have my kids circumsised. It's a gray issue.

How do you know that the infection risk is greatly reduced? There seems to be a whole score of medical researchers who seem to seriously doubt that.

Anyways, I liked this quote:

http://www.norm-uk.org/circumcision_myths.html

"Amputation of a healthy part of the body is a poor and barbaric means of disease control. On this basis one could recommend amputation of the toes under the pretext of preventing athlete's foot for example, and pre-pubescent castration would have a very high success rate in the prevention of venereal disease."

From dlitt:
Tug your brass zipper into your foreskin and tell me that is no more painful than a vaccination. Then imagine cutting it right off.

From http://www.norm-uk.org/function.html
"The foreskin is as sensitive as the fingertips or the lips of the mouth. It contains a richer variety and greater concentration of specialised nerve receptors than any other part of the penis. These specialised nerve endings can discern motion, subtle changes in temperature, and fine gradations of texture."

Motion: How about a slicing one?
Subtle change in temperature: How about a cold blade?
Fine graduation in texture: How about a sharp edge?

YOUCH!

Seriously, why the hell would a part of the body so crammed with nerve receptors be so useless (let alone, harmful) that you can just cut it off...

Locking people up because they say something like this is rediculous. I don't really see it happening but the fact that Austrian law apparantly has this posibility is quite idiotic.

As for the Micheal Jackson - Muhammed comparison, In the case of MJ we can assume that he is fully aware of the fact that peadophilia is a crime in our modern times, and if he isn't he damn wel should, whilst in Muhammed's time peadophilia was not a crime. It was probably even common practice, however despicable that might seem nowadays. So yes, you could say that Muhammed was a peadophile. We could condemn whole societies as peadophile perverts on the basis of the modern laws and values we have today. And yet, we don't when we speak about the Greeks or the Romans...

Like you said "both would be considered pedophile for our standards". But again, locking people up for saying that (even if it's not really true) is just moronic. We both agree.

I agree Roland. Taboos should be broken and we should fight for preserving the liberties of western society. My own point is that we can never break them by random bashing like Wilders is doing.
Saying that Muhammed was a peadophile is a little unfair. Times change, and no matter how we feel about it nowadays, we can not superimpose our modern morals on a society which existed 1400 years ago. We see the ancient Greeks and the Romans as the very basis of our modern western civilization yet slavery, bloody gladiator games and pederasty were daily practice in those societies.

Calling out for bookburnings is not heroic and randomly bashing muslims will not solve anything..
Alot of people nowadays don't seem to care for a solution anymore. They are just so angry at islam that it's no longer about finding solutions so much as just trying to hurt as many as possible.

But what exactly do you think we will gain from telling muslims that their prophet is a peadophile? That their book should be burned? Is their seriously anyone in here that thinks that will make muslims stop and think critically or even give up their believe altogether? Would you?

Just for sports, try and see yourself in that position. This is presumably how these people expect the conversation to go:

Creationist: So you like Darwinism ey?

Darwinist: Yes! I have read On The Origin Of Species a million times!

Creationist: Well I have just started The Freedom Party and we will be exposing Darwin for the peadophile that he was! and I am going to propose that we burn all his books for they are dangerous to society. Anyone believing in darwinism should tear up his books if he wants to keep on living in our modern society or just sod off to some other country.

Converted Darwinist: Hmmm...Yeah now that you put it that way, I think I'll just give up my believe in evolution and start believing in creationism, where do I sign up?

And don't tell me that it's not comparable because Darwinism has been scientifically prooved. This doesn't matter to a believer. They genuinely feel they have the truth on their side too...

Comment #113630 by Nighttripper on January 20, 2008 at 8:16 am

Aside from the just remarks that Joost Snijder made in post 113623, I think this article catches the situation much more truthfully then some previous articles about Wilders, in which he was portrayed as some sort of heroic freedom fighter. But as liberalartist said in his post; the guy is a complete hypocrit and only out for self-gain. Making increasingly idiosyncratic remarks about burning and tearing up Korans on the one hand but praising our Christian-Judean society on the other. Unfortunately, the media is loving it and so every blurb he utters is evening news. It is only defiling the debate. Not doing anything to solve anything.

Having said that I think it's BS to already forbid a film which hasn't even been seen by anyone. Although I doubt it will help in any way and knowing Wilders oversimplified views it will not convince any Muslim about thinking critically about their faith. Much to the contrary I expect.

If some conservative faithhead would make a movie about atheism and try to refute it using arguments which are over the top and evidently hypocritical (like they usually are by the way...). Calling out for the burning of atheist books, because atheism will destroy the world... I would have stopped listening after the first few seconds. I would probably be even more convinced of my atheist conviction seeing that my opponents have resorted to such desperate measures.

But supposing some respected atheist would plead for the need for some sort of spirituality in life, although maybe not in a religious sense, I would be inclined to at least listen to what he is saying. That is why I have much more confidence in secular muslims like Ahmed Abuthaleb and Ahmed Marcouch then someone like Geert Wilders to promote secularism and keep radical islam in check.

42. Controversial Anti-Muslim Dutch Film Adds to Already Simmering Tensions

Comment #98163 by Nighttripper on December 13, 2007 at 7:03 am

Ligfietser already explained what kind of a guy Wilders is, I will just add my own opinion. I said something about Geert Wilders in another article announcing his movie so I will repost that

but first:
Pim Fortuyn was not shot "on behalf of the country's Muslims" he was shot because he had plans to introduce Mass-industry flats for pigs (stacking floor upon floor). I mean, the murderer was an animal rights activist... I must admit it sounds really sexy to pretend he did it for the Mulsims and tie it all together in an article but it's pretty far from the truth.

But on to our buddy Geert:
Geert Wilders is a populist politician. He is constantly trying to get into the Media with off-balanced comments on Islam and middle eastern foreigners in general designed to make people anxious about muslims in particular but praises the Christian and Jewish faiths as tolerant and good.

This man does not want to do anything against religion, just against muslims in general or actualy; foreigners in general and muslims in particular. He is riding on a wave of irrational fear. And I don't mean fear for extreme muslims or fundementalists, any muslim is bad in his book. The only people he is reaching with his hatespeeches on Islam are the ones who already are biased against muslims in general and have a discriminating view on foreigners. Saying things like "Muslims must burn their Koran's", comparing the Koran to Mein Kampf. Declaring; "I don't like the fact that two Muslims will soon be sitting here as members of the Upper House" after the last election.
That isn't gonna win anyone over to his side that wasn't already on it. Especially since he seems to be so in love with Christianity and Judaism.

About his view on Hirshi Ali's protection: Geert Wilders, together with the Christian Democratic Party of Jan-Peter Balkenende (the prime-minister) were the first ones to declare that "It's about time she starts coughing up money herself".

The thing I resent most about Wilders is that he is constantly putting himself in a victim role when he is being criticised by media or other political figures, saying that he is being demonised and that they are responsible if something terrible will happen to him. Trying to generate votes by posing as a victim not unlike our Mormon friend Mitt Romney does.

Nothing good can come from him, believe me as a Dutch guy being constantly confronted with this man and his biased views for the last few years.

For anyone interested here is an article written by a representative of Antifa which is an anti discrimination platform in the Netherlands:
Click me for the Antifa article! (in english).

Note though, that this is an opinionpiece by Antifa on Wilders. But most of it is a summing up of things he has declared since 2004.

Why do we keep getting these pious apologies for things no one really cares about? I never expected the pope to apologise for them, but since he did, people like Mr. Morris here use it as some kind of twisted argument for atheists having to apologise for millions of other deaths.

I don't care about how many people were killed by the inquisition or killed by the Salem Witch Trials. Why does this keep coming up? I don't need an apology for it. Lot's of horrible things have happened in history. As if the apologies for something that happened hundreds of years ago makes religion nowadays "alright again".

My concern is with the pope telling people in Aids riddled countries that they will burn in hell if they use condoms.

Or the way they are actively opposing stem cell research which could save millions of lives because they believe that their so called "God" would feel he is getting competition in the creation department.

Or a 14 year old girl having to bear children after being raped because the church says that their "God" would weep if she had an abortion.

Or homosexuals being seen as "sinners" because "God" obviously feels that it doesn't fit into his creation when two people of the same sex feel sexual affection for each other. (and "God" apparently likes sneak-peeking into peoples bedrooms to inspect their sexual preferences).

In short; I don't care about what the church did hundreds of years ago and I don't need any apology for it . I want apologies and an immediate stop to all the atrocities it is commiting in our modern times.

Right now! Not in 500 years time.

after receiving reports that men had started gathering outside the police station where she was being held

I can see them now... A mob of rough and tumble men, their faces red with anger. The collective throbbing of the veins at their temples is almost audible above their furious collective screams. Bystanders start edging away into the sidestreets; This is no place for innocent curiousness... The eyes of the policemen charged with protecting the policestation swivel back and forth. They can feel the pressure building up. It's like a tingling in the air.

A large man with a rugged black beard ascends the stairs of the policestation while the guards exchange terrified glances. The man starts shouting above the chaos in a deep menacing voice; "BROTHERS! LET US BRING FORTH THIS EVIL SPAWN OF SATAN!". A cheer goes up as the crowds part, reveiling an furiously wild-eyed man holding the offender in a steel grip. "DEATH TO THE FLUFFY BEAR!" the crowd repetively scream in unison, boosted by the voice of the man on the stairs.

Muhammad is manhandeled to the front, it has a sad look on it's floppy face. It is being hit, kicked and spit on along it's seemingly endless journey through the unfuriated crowd. "ALL WHO DEFILE ALLAH MUST BE PUNISHED BY DEATH AND ETERNAL HELLFIRE!" screams the bearded man unto the sea of anger. A ragged cheer goes up as the bearded man grabs the helpless toy and repeatedly smashes his fist into it's stuffed face. "SUFFER! YOU SOFTHEADED DEMON!" the man screams out with every relentles blow. Muhammad has a dignified, stoic look as he stares his executer in the face. This is too much for the bearded brute. Muhammad is thrown to the ground, drenched in gasoline and lights up like a candle accompanied by victorious cries. It is a sad day for small soft toybears everywhere.
