Interesting..I remember hearing/reading that Vanaras were a tribe living in the forests who helped Rama in his quest. To accentuate the difference between the King Rama and the tribe, they may have had an appendage added to their err...behinds.the words Vana + Nara and Vaanara sound pretty close. The wikipedia entry seems to justify the same:

The bridge has been described as an outdated idea for economic reasons. The other part is, if all the 'minorities' get their wishes 'pandered to' in our secular democracy, why not the majority?
Needless to say, a dangerous line of thinking...
