Sorry for butting in .... but this is one of the posts on which I feel I can add a little sanity..........

Being born and brought up in a Hindu home and observing all Tamil cultural norms and observances, I can and always will hold onto my cultural Tamilness (if that is even a word). I can do no other. I was brought up listening to tamil devotional songs, watched hindu epics on video and joined in during the festivals of Kavadi and Deepavali. All these are unfortunately tied into the hindu religion, but this is the society I grew up in and became the freethinker that I am today.

The fact that I don't believe in the mouthings of hindu priests and the concept of gods, does not mean that I cannot enjoy some of the most beautiful music I have heard and which reminds me of my childhood and growing up in the shadow of our temples. I will never glorify religious belief but I shall also not discard my culture which has shaped me.

I can understand Richard not finding anything wrong with "cultural" christianity as I have some great musical compositions on the christmas theme, most notably, the Christmas Trilogy by the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. People, there is NOTHING wrong with listening to it and enjoying the "blissful" chords, the problem arises when people take these myths literally and start deluding themselves that god gives a shit about them.

I have been to the Meenakshi Temple complex in India, to the Notre Dame in France and to St Paul's in London and was amazed at the extent of HUMAN endeavor albeit for the wrong reasons. They were all too beautiful for words and I can see how the medieval populace could have been fooled into believing these structures to be divinely inspired. We know better, so we can merely enjoy them for their architecture and feel good about our human achievements.

Religiosity is part of our psyche, I firmly believe that. My home is a virtual shrine to Everton Football Club. From the kit my daughter and I use on Saturdays while watching the game to the Everton pendant she wears to school proudly proclaiming her allegiance to the team to the mug I drink my morning coffee in. All activity at home stops during the televised matches and I even schedule my weekends around match times, not unlike many Christ worshippers do with regards to church.

By throwing away our cultural heritage we are denying what we are and this reminds me of various family members who "converted" to christianity and even went to the extent of anglicizing their beautiful Tamil names so that they could distance themselves as far as possible from their hindu roots.

I will never propose the burning of all religious literature as they should be preserved for their literary value and as an integral part of our civilisation thus far. This does not mean we should believe in them and all the crap they say.

We should remain who we are .......... just a lot less deluded from our christian, hindu, muslim and jewish brethren.

I have been on this forum for a while now and this twat of an excuse for a primate of Indian descent has finally gotten to me.

As a fellow primate of Indian descent living in CHRISTIAN South Africa, I have had enough of these evangelical hypocrites and born-again pieces-of-shit. They were never vocal when their white Christian brethren were oppressing 40 million + people of all faiths and assigning sub-human status to the majority of the population in our land. The number of deaths in detention and massacres of people of coulour for the last four hundred years of Christian occupation will probably make his hair stand on end.

Treating people worse than you would treat your own stock animals and extol these virtues from the pulpits of the Dutch Reformed Church of south Africa is surely an example that this sanctimonious prick did not think of quoting now ... did he ???

Not to mention the Christian massacres of the Balkans in the 90's and the retaliatory Muslim massacres in Bosnia around that time.

The continuous carnage in allah's Pakistan and any other "stan" you look at should surely shut this idiot up.

Oh ... and it was not Stalin himself who wasted 20 million of his own people ... it was probably reformed Christians who did his work for him .... just as gleefully as the Christian Nazis turn the nozzles that fed the gas chambers.
