1. Blaming 'The God Delusion'

Interesting review, in some ways.

I would, however, argue that in a book on religion, I think it is only fair to concentrate on religion, rather than ethnic, class and international conflict.

Although I would point out that ethnic conflict overlaps with the religious so frequently that for the purposes of TGD, the distinction is immaterial to the general philosophical argument.

It is rather futile to read and comment on such nonsense, but I feel impelled anyway.

The author really does seem to be esposing the counsel of despair, as Sancus put it the "merits of resignation." How will mankind ever progress if we all subscribe to this belief system? "Doesn't matter, can't change it, just accept it." From an author who describes himself as non-religious, that sounds awfully meek to me!

The stupidity of his rant against the hope that IVF can bring is equally apparent. Defeatist nonsense. Why give people hope if it is only to be shattered? Why try to improve the technology, it might still fail? What on earth motivates this man?

But what struck me as most bizarre was his comment about how "In our new-found happiness, 10% of us feel constrained to take anti-depressants."

What a ridiculous point! As if the world has ever been without misery and depression that some people find overwhelming!

Anti-depressants are a product of technological advancement, science if you will. And I am sure that they are a hell of a lot better than the electro-shock treatment and lifelong incarceration in an asylum that one of my great-great uncles was subjected to deal with his depression.
