Go easy on Ken for his religiosity, he's alright. ;)

3. Religious groups want Russian cartoon channel shut down
Comment #146073 by Slyer on March 18, 2008 at 3:16 pm
Yeah the two South Park episode that makes fun of Atheism are quite odd, they portray Richard having gay sex with Mr Garrison as he was under the impression that he was a woman. Half of the episodes is based in the future where everyone are Atheists and they argue over what to call themselves, each claim they have the most superior science and end up killing each other over it. Just a taaaaad wrong, but still funny.
Where did Richard respond to it?
"The atheists could have just as well written a letter to demand that all religious channels and programs be closed. We work respecting the constitution, we do not violate the law."
Amen to that, those bastards and their double standards.
4. Religion 'linked to happy life'
Comment #146065 by Slyer on March 18, 2008 at 3:00 pm
This goes against what I've experienced, most of the Atheists I know are all laid back and happy people, it's the Christians that are more likely to be worriers and always upset about something.
Ignorance can be bliss and some people are very adept at making sure they know as little as possible about certain subjects.
I don't think I could ever force myself to stay ignorant or wish I was still ignorant after learning.
I have to agree with the people that compare delusions like god belief to drugs.
People sometimes give up their drugs or whatever habit when they become more religious because they have addictive personalities, they just swap from one thing to the other.
"I was fucked up on drugs but now I'm fucked up on Jesus!"
Christianity is a happy drug that swaps physical side effects for mental ones. You gain blissful ignorance but lose logic and reason.
Myself I'm at peace with the universe and don't need a drug or god to make me happy.
And yes, they need to do a study that compares happiness of children between those that believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny and those that do not. Not at all saying that happiness can be measured, you couldn't rely on the subject giving a proper testimony.
As Sam Harris says, happiness is the absence of things that make you unhappy moreso than the possession of things that make you happy.

I think I need to rekindle my reading, I used to read a lot up until a few years ago.
Last book I read was half way through the wheel of time series by Robert Jordan, those books are long! nearly 1000 pages each and 12 books in the series once it's complete. He died last year so the last book of the series is being completed by someone else.
Recommended reading if you have LOTS of time. :P

Even if you say that all the 20% that are unknown are all atheist and agnostics the statistics are still in our favour. 80% of answered were religious, 20% were atheist/agnostic/unknown.
America is 20% atheist/agnostic yes?
What they claim is that religious people are less likely to commit crimes, but what you see is that they are at the very least as likely, but clearly more likely.
Woah, I just looked at the trends for NZ and the irreligious, I am quite pleased. :)

You're right about the mosquitoes.
"New Zealand has 16 species of mosquito, known to Māori as waeroa. Twelve are endemic (unique to New Zealand) and four are introduced."
By pests I was mainly referring to rats and possums, rats first introduced by the Maori and possums introduced by europeans.
Te Papa gave me the wrong idea about the mozzies, didn't it tell me flies were introduced by europeans too?

49. This deadly religious resistance to vaccinations
Comment #96922 by Slyer on December 11, 2007 at 5:13 am
In 1978, there was evidently an escape of smallpox from containment in a research laboratory in Birmingham, England. A medical photographer, Janet Parker, died from the disease itself, after which the scientist responsible for the unit, Professor Henry Bedson, committed suicide. In light of this accident, all known stocks of smallpox were destroyed, except the stocks at the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Russian State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR in Koltsovo, where a regiment of troops guards it. Under such tight control, smallpox would, it was thought, never be let out again. Even though the destruction of virus stocks was ordered in 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996[citation needed], they have not yet been destroyed, since a number of researchers still wish to retain the stocks for scientific purposes.
