1. Unlike Others, U.S. Defends Freedom to Offend in Speech

FF:
Yes I do understand, and I think that the US was founded on very good principles, including the said right to bear arms. I just think in a modern context, it can lead to problems by having such easily available firepower.

Al:
I agree that Nazi Germany might have been a case for such a right. But an extreme case, of which I don't have sufficient knowlegde to fully explore in this instance.

Fighting Falcon:

I don't want to get off on a side bar here but I'm honestly curious to hear why anyone would object to the Bill of Rights. What Amendments in particular do you not like and why?

& Al-Rawandi

I'm not objecting to the whole Bill of rights, just a bit of it. My particular gripe is with the Right to Bear Arms. It's not a right we have ever needed in Europe and we're better off without it - just look at the amount of gun crime in the US vs Europe. I do like most of the other bits though.

I'm not a fan of the whole of the Bill of Rights (I'm British BTW) but the First Ammendment is one constitutional right that the US seems to have got right. Defend freedom of speech - and that includes the right to offend. It seems free speech has gone out of the window here in the UK.

edit - ooh, first post! ;)

Alexmzk (comment#191693) :

of course i don't respect the idea of parents teaching their children Hell, but i will fight for their right to do so.

I see what you did there. You're going for the "I don't like what your sayin' but I support your right to say it" freedom of speech line.
But, I really think you don't understand the issue here. It is not simply parents talking religion at their kids, it is the mental abuse caused by what is being preached to the child. It is very real abuse of children, and if you really understood the problem, you wouldn't be "fighting for their right to tell their children about hell".

Goldy:

No, it is not a race, but what is your mental image of a Muslim? I dare say it is nothing like the face you see in the mirror every morning...

Yes it can do. My local city (Exeter) had an attempted terrorist suicide bomb attack only a few weeks back. The perpetrator was white. He had become just as Islamic as any other Muslim.

So don't you dare try to suggest that so-called 'islamophobia' has anything to do with race, or xenophobia!

My 'mental image' of a muslim is anyonbe who thinks that a book written 1400 years ago was the word of god and want's me dead, and to impose Sharia Law on my country.

7. Town moves against Islamic school

Comment #184956 by Heretic on May 26, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Can someone explain to me why this is a racism issue. Honestly! I just don't understand where this notion has come from. Islam is a religion, not a race. If there was a proposal for a Muslim school in my rural 'back yard' then I'd want to put up an opposition too. I don't care what race these people are, but they are Muslims, which is something that I find aboherent.

Mitchell Gilks:

I disagree with RD that there are no atheist children, it is not at all equal and opposite to theism. Under the definition I use, which is a lack of belief in deities, my cat is an atheist.

This is so true. One cannot be a "theist" until they are (1) old enough to understand what religion is to some degree, and (2) have been given an oppertunity to discover a religion.

Therefore one is a-theist (or AN atheist, if you will) - without theistic beliefs - until such time.

Barry:

Who is "they"?

"they" is muslims. And I agree with what you say.

I wish we could help, but as the article states, the gulf between our culture and theirs ( I would say the gulf between civilised society and the medieval islamic mindset ) is just too vast.

So lets get our troops out of harms way. On the other hand I think we could and should be doing as much as possible for anyone who wishes to flee the islamic society.

I'm all for getting our troops out of their f*cking country when I read this stuff. Sod the lot of them. When they grow up as a society and learn some reason, then maybe we can help out around the place, but until then, f*ck 'em.

Exactly! And this is why I don't want their fucking culture anywhere near my country. Yet, one gets called a 'racist' for saying any against 'multicultralism'. This whole situation makes me so angry.
(sorry if i've gone a little off topic)

After my first assembly in year 7 (age 11) in the UK, we were all handed a French-English dictionary and a new testament by the school, if I remember correctly.
In the UK schools are leaglly obliged to give a daily assembly of a 'broadly christian' outlook.

One of them was a girl of perhaps seven. She wore a headscarf. I was uncomfortable seeing her, and only after the deal was done did I consider that I might have refused to sell him the car, based on his treatment of his daughter.

You never know, she might actually have been one of his wives. (Following the example of the Paedo- sorry, Prophet Muhammad)

Comment #146012 by Heretic on March 18, 2008 at 1:28 pm

Wait, you don't hear people complain when South Park makes fun of non-religious people, do you? I mean, Dawkins response to his cartoon version on TV was simple that they got the accent wrong. I didn't see him and other atheists burning US embassies and such.

It was a terrible attempt at a 'British' accent. I do love South Park though.

You pretty much have to hate your computer (and by extension yourself since you still have to use your computer afterwards) to install RealPlayer on it.

True - I use Real Alternative, which lets you play RM audio and video without the horrid Real Player

Bingo - Heretic, you win the prize!

Woohoo! :)

I would consider, therefore, that you cannot simply be "an agnostic" as a distinct alternative to being either a theist or an atheist.

Yes. This subject is explored early on in some detail in the book "Atheism: the case against god" (Smith), if my memory serves me correct. (One of the first books I read on Atheism).

Anyone else a little nervous that the Lows label their children as Atheists?

No not really. Atheism is the default position for all children. Everyone is an atheist until they become indoctrinated by some theist belief.

I'd certainly like to know if "Humanistic Jews" mutilate their son's genitals. There's no indication here that they would, but one has to wonder.

21. Why multiculturalism must be abandoned

Comment #125224 by Heretic on February 11, 2008 at 5:10 am

This is what I've been saying for ages (well, to friends and family at least).

To be against mulitculturism (a phrase that always makes me shudder) is NOT being racist.

Race is a non-issue here - but cultures are man made and (just like religions) have no need to be respected without good reason. If a particular culture is morraly wrong, why should we tolerate it in the name of multiculturism?

22. Sharia law in UK is 'unavoidable'

Comment #123919 by Heretic on February 8, 2008 at 1:54 am

Presumably RW is supposed to believe the Christian guff he preaches, therefore he must also belive that Mohammad was a false prophet, and muslim laws are man-made and that all muslims are going to hell anyway, so why worry if they don't like our laws?

I've come to realise that Christmas is that special time of year when we remember the one who died, came back to life, and saved us all - Doctor Who.

Ressurections:
Jesus:1 Doctor Who:10(and counting!)

The Doctor WINS!
