His statue should be placed on the spare plinth in Trafalgar Square. No question. Who has brought more awe and wonder to the nation, the Sagan of life science.

RE; LOGICEL
"He had quite a task to disabuse me of regarding socialist medicine as 'free.'"
Nobody ever said it was "free", only free at the point of use so that people are not given treatment based on their ability to pay. (A quite sick idea when you really think about it trained doctors turning away those in need.)
Also it has the added bonus that as it is paid for through tax those who can afford it pay more than those who can't. With the net result being that everyone thats EVERYONE, gets a decent standard of healthcare without having to sell everything the own just for being sick.
I'm sure now you will mention burecratic mess ups, and I'm sure they cost the system money but do you think it is more than the shareholders profits in the American system which is said to contain 47 million people without adequate insurance cover.
I really hope that your not one of these people who think the rich are rich because they work harder (as if a CEO works harder than a coal miner) I'm sure your not, so you must see that it is reasonable that those who gain the most from society must also be prepared to put some back in so as to raise the standard of everyone.
It seems to me that some people would rather pay for shareholders profits rather than help the wealthfare of their fellow man, strange people!

scooternyc, we have seen your vision of society before in England, Dickens wrote a few words about it (charming place so full of love and kindness) and as far as I'm concerned (reading your views) I'm glad the Atlantic is an ocean and not a lake. My heart goes out to the people who have to share a country with you. How dare people be born stupid or poor or both and how dare they expect their fellow humans with higher intellects or larger pay packets to help them in any way I mean we may be of the same species and share a planet but HELP A FELLOW HUMAN how disgusting, I need my money to spend on crap I don't need.
We may not believe in souls, but that doesn't mean we have to have no heart. A society of competing individuals in which the (intellectually) strong prosper and the weak go to the wall is not the society of sentient beings but a society beneath most social mammals, and I will personally use ever piece of spare energy I have to see that nothing of this kind is ever reintroduced into this sceptred isle. (And there are hundreds of millions in europe who feel exactly the same).
