Jeffers,
In my tiny, insular country (USA) "y" is only a vowell sometimes and "w" is right out! However, I'm told that things get "different" when one travels outside of the USA and some people even speak different languages. I'm also told that the only way I can truly be saved is through Jesus. any advice?

Heavy Metal Worms could only be from a place with TEN letters and no proper vowells in it: Cwmystwyth. I have to go to Wales just to see signs like this. Why does Tom Jones not have a name with a dozen consecutive consonants?

BLUEBIRD- "Happy Birthday to Verdi and Saint Saenz" That was cool. Verdi is great- however, often I hear some real bland classical piece, and then it's announced "That was by Camille Saint- Saenz. It's happened THREE times to me. Sheesh, how off topic can I possibly be?! Shout out and a BRAINBOW to Verdi!

"a branch of human ignorance"- that's beautiful. So, in a way, you could say it's evolving. What a disturbing thought- it's adapting! I think we have to change the environment it is adapting to, so perhaps we could speed up it's extinction.

Just trying to get the "edit" phrase off of my comment to get back to the thread takes me about 8 clicks- I know I'm not doing it properly. Could somebody advise me or direct me to somewhere on this site that explains it the mental midget I am!- Thank You

Wouldn't the segment of society that is being catered to, benefit the most? Wouldn't the segment of society that benefits the most, grow the most? I'm not stating this as fact, but simply saying that is a good explanation for why there appears to be so few lucid Americans and so many crazy Americans (as mentioned in comment #10).

Diacanu- As an American, I always had this same theory about capitalism magnifying the ignorant crowd by catering to the lowest common denominator.
It does seem as simple as that as to why the naive people seem to be more numerous and more vocal. Even though this country had a lot of religulus crazies coming here in the early dayz, I think Capitalism has augmented the nutjob population.

It's like EVERY OTHER RELIGION- some, or maybe even most don't believe in Satan as a supernatural being- but SOME DO. That same "make it what ever you want to" crap exists also in Satanism- otherwise it would be a very cool thing, as it ALMOST is.

EPEEIST- I read the article you linked. The best sentence was, of course, the last of the article: "But our job is not to ignore creationists because they are wrong, but to show them as a way of knowing, science is so very much better".
We should get off of our high horses and simply teach. Which ever method gets the point across best is the best method.

As an atheist, by default I cross my arms and stand firm whenever this evo/ID shit comes up, but there is something not being mentioned.
Integrity dictates there should be no comprimise in the creationism silliness- BUT- realistically, WHAT IF it backfires? Then we should be accused of being stubborn instead of a circle jerk of integrity!
This is what I mean- we (on this website) all know that creationism is NOT an alternative theory to evoluton. But a scary percentage of the population DOES! If we keep saying- no it's not! no it's not! no it's not!- eventually this deluded percentage of society (maybe they're already there?) will view public education AS A WHOLE to be the enemy. I think we have to find a way through a very regulated procedure to "teach" that although the science community doesn't view creationism as a valid alternative, a segment of the public does. Now students, lets see how creationism compares as a viable alternative to evolution....
We may feel like we've compromised a bit, but it should get a lot of student's attention.
I think this tactic should be considered. We may loose too much ground out of pride and stubborness.

There's an entire other issue in the USA besides the issue that we should look more at the total person instead of their being a theist or an atheist. That's the issue that politicians CAN'T say they are an atheist because they probably won't get elected. Disgusting and backwards but true. We atheists like reality. That's the ugly fucking reality here in America. I would see some light in the forest if several high ranking politicians "came out" as atheists, because you know there has to be a lot of them.

The very first thing that struck me was- How is this a revelation to Hitchens? Yes, I know, literature is his thing, but even I don't find the eye socket salamanders to be surprising NEW evidence. Very strange, almost as if Hitch is losing his wit. Alzheimers? Lets hope not. I think the illusion that humans are progressing in their evolution towards perfection is simply because we are slowly adapting (perfecting, if you will) to our environment that hasn't changed all that much in 3 or 4 million years. No?

Nothing but shock art (or, ahem, product). My all time favorite that I don't think will ever be topped in my puritanical country (USA) was a caption reading "Jesus Fucking Christ". Yes, you can guess the picture beneath it: it was a picture of Jesus....fucking Christ. Priceless. Most metal bands are dumbed down, superficial shock angst. For the best in doom metal (it's gotta be oppressively slow for me) you must check out "My Dying Bride". They're Yorkies. (no, not dogs). sample lyrics: "My Christ my want (x3), My fucking Crist my want". Best album- Turn Loose The Swans. bye

Dawkins is saying there should no longer be a taboo against criticizing religion. Why not homosexuality? We TOO OFTEN have to dance around any discussion about homosexuality. I accept it. I have zero prblem with gay people. So what? It's also "ok" to totally abstain from sex or be bisexual. If there is some scientific reasoning or a genetic explanation of why some (or even many) humans are not hetero, then let's delve into it without politically correct hesitation.
