"Like most liberal educators..."
My number one pet peeve is when they assume that not being religious makes you a liberal.
2. Atheism shall make you free
Comment #46922 by CaptainShiny on June 2, 2007 at 8:17 am
It sounds like the author, and perhaps a few posters, need to read some Russell.
Anyway, I was relieved to find that this article wasn't some bullshit about how Hitler was an atheist, as the title had made me worry.

Crocoduck... I think I just shat myself.

: ) There's also a great P&T about this. Abstaining from protected sex because condoms aren't 100% safe is like avoiding being hit by a car by staying inside... all the time.

Scathing of believers? Not really. Of the beliefs, yes.
6. Study: Religion is Good for Kids
Comment #34858 by CaptainShiny on April 25, 2007 at 1:15 pm
And so what if they're well-behaved? I'd rather have a kid think for himself and be a handful rather than a mindless, obedient, boring little slave.
7. Atheists split on how to not believe
Comment #34192 by CaptainShiny on April 23, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Most of the criticism of humanism is
a. based on the people who treat it as if it was religion.
or
b. Hiply cynical college-campus bullshit about how humans are so awful.
Humanism is not claiming that humans are perfect, or that all humans are great. It is simply celebrating the greatness of the individual human mind, which has been and can be greater than any religious inspiration. And it is not, as one person suggested, anything like a secular Christianity. Christianity is often about how humans are all shameful disgusting sinners who deserve to burn in hell and should feel guilty about the tiniest iota of worldly pleasure, even if it harms no one.

Anyone else think that Pinker looks a bit like Voltaire? Maybe it's just the hair.
9. Debate between Alister McGrath and Peter Atkins

My favorite part:
"We see a world so infinitely complex--"
"So we should just cop out?"
10. James Cameron finds grave of Jesus & Son
Comment #23287 by CaptainShiny on February 27, 2007 at 2:43 pm
Sweet Jesus, I hope Cameron doesn't say he's an atheist. that's just what we need, association with this wanker. Even though I liked "Aliens".
11. Pope speaks out against 'designer babies'
Comment #23127 by CaptainShiny on February 26, 2007 at 1:14 pm
He seems to have an image of designing evil soulless robo-babies from scratch.
12. Foreword for the UK edition of 'Letter to a Christian Nation'
Comment #22236 by CaptainShiny on February 13, 2007 at 4:37 pm
Sam Harris is spot-on when it comes to criticizing formal religion. I don't really "get" his spirituality fetish, though.
13. Review of 'The Quotable Atheist'

As Michael Shermer said on the "Bible" episode of "Bullshit!", smart people are very good at justifying things they've come to believe for non-smart reasons.
18. Neither intellect nor faith will save humanity
Comment #18480 by CaptainShiny on January 21, 2007 at 6:16 am
">>How can America be described as a "once great country" when it was built on violence and has yet to come to terms with that fact?<<
Would you care to cite a country not built on violence?"
A good point. And at least America was founded by secularist intillectuals (who have been spinning in their graves for quite some time now.)
19. Noam Chomsky Interview on Faith
Comment #18477 by CaptainShiny on January 21, 2007 at 6:01 am
I'm really not a big fan of Chomsky. He seems to have that irrational science-phobia. I also don't like hiww wishy-washiness. "try not to have faith in irrational things"?!?! TRY?!?!?!
20. Federal Way schools restrict Gore film
Comment #17304 by CaptainShiny on January 12, 2007 at 7:32 pm
[sic] [sic] and [sic]. Make that "pissed off" and "not denying or anything"
21. Federal Way schools restrict Gore film
Comment #17303 by CaptainShiny on January 12, 2007 at 7:30 pm
Even I am pissed of at this guy, and I think Gore's overexaggerating this a bit. I'll admit I haven't done my homework on this, but politicians always twist scientific facts for their own agenda. I'm denying global warming or anything.
Comment #17301 by CaptainShiny on January 12, 2007 at 7:22 pm
I think this is the first "personal" article on Dawkins I've read that doesn't mention that he hates everyone and feasts upon baby flesh.
Comment #16758 by CaptainShiny on January 8, 2007 at 1:35 pm
I'm an American (as well as a Kiwi), but I'm tempted to say that my fellow Americans can be embarassing. The founding fathers would be spinning in their graves.

Quite a humorous story. Sorry to laugh at your comical misfortune. I supose this is better than reading the bible and getting your jaw locked from all the screaming.
25. Executing Saddam Hussein was an Act of Vandalism

27. How the Great Atheist got polite society standing
Comment #14720 by CaptainShiny on December 24, 2006 at 6:39 pm
It really angers me when people try to make Richard seem an arrogant pr!ck. He seems like a decent fellow, but even so, his personality is completely irrelevant.
28. Response to Richard Dawkins' Criticisms in The God Delusion
Comment #13218 by CaptainShiny on December 16, 2006 at 8:41 am
I wonder if I'm related to this guy... I don't know many other Swinburnes. Anyway, I diasgree with him, and I wish he could just leave science alone.
