1. US school district sued over homophobic 'witch hunt'

No, AlexAtheist, here in America, we do it to appease the Christians.

I agree that this is an erosion of civil liberties but it is politically motivated, not religiously motivated. My point is that Europeans are quick to point the finger at the backwards religious Americans without recognizing that in Europe the governments and populace often appease Islam at the cost of their civil liberties.

I'd also like to mention that whenever my foreign friends here make a comment about the religiosity of Americans I calmly point out that in the USA we dont trip overselves to be politically correct and appease Islam at the expense of our own safety and civil liberties as is often the case in other Western countries, especially the UK and throughout Europe. This is usually met with a stammering and nonsensical defense or silence.

Actually this story was covered by the main stream media here in the USA. As a gay man in the South, albeit a progressive university town, this is especially troubling to me but sometimes I think that those who live outside of the USA think that most Americans are a bunch of knuckle dragging religious troglodytes which isnt the case. Sure we have a strong religious tradition which I despise but Canada, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand all have more than their fair share of ignorant yobbos too you know. Things are moving towards the secular here, especially among younger people. In another generation or so the USA is going to be a much different place.

Here are two links to the story in the American news:

4. Couple charged in Norway over genital mutilation of daughters

Comment #190105 by AlexAtheist on June 8, 2008 at 11:38 am

PopeStig,
Yes it is true that had the family stayed in Gambia the girls would have been mutilated but the problem is that barbarians bring this sort of practice to a Western country and then demand that it be respected out of misguided multiculturalism. Ghettoisation follws and then we end up with "no go zones" within our own countries.

RamziD,
Why is it so easy for so many people to confuse cultural criicism with racism? Since when did Islam become a race?

What do you expect, Norway, when you have an immigration policy of allowing people with a twelfth century mindset concerning the treatment of women to be welcomed into your country? Islam is not compatible with a modern liberal Western democracy. Take off the politically correct lenses and see things for how they really are.

6. Group wants Wi-Fi banned from public buildings

I have an ex boyfriend who was "chemically sensitive" so I was not allowed to use scented soap, deodorant, laundry detergent or spray cologne or air freshener because he would have an attack...but he was a chain smoker. It was such a silly situation that I could never take him seriously. I think these electro sensitive people are just seeking attention which trivialises people who have real sensitivities to certain things.

7. Religious Freedom in Military Questioned

I am grateful that I live in a country like the USA where we have freedom of speech, even for crazies like Ann Coulter. In the UK free speech really isn't free if restrictions apply.

What's the deal with the obviously gay "Father" Morris? I want to tell him "Calm down, Mary! It's ok to be gay now." :-)

As a gay man and atheist I was particularlly concerned over the Christian attack tactics at the gay bar. I was especially sickened by the gay man who said that he felt god "taking away his homosexuality"-yeah right, let's check back with this guy in a couple weeks. I fear for my country.
