4. There Are No Ghosts in Your Brain

Rational_G "Any reason to think the qualia problem won't be eventually solved by neurobiology?"

Neurobiology may be reducing a LITTLE too far. (Don't worry, you're no where near the realm of those quantum quacks.)
Search youtube for "Phantoms in the brain"
its a BBC video about V. S. Ramachandran. (he also has a book by the same name.) He's already distinguishing between "unconscious vision" and conscious vision and unconscious and conscious experience in general (ie. qualia) Pay specific attention to the man with blindsight. He's basically a partial zombie (in the philosopher's sense). Also, way back in 1991 in Dennett's "Consciousness Explained," he had a chapter segment called "Blindsight: Partial Zombiehood?" That's a good read too.

"if you take away the parts of the mousetrap all you have is wood, a piece of metal, and a spring and there's no other possible use for any of that stuff"

LOL!!! Brilliant mockery. If any of you here have seen the Ken Miller video on youtube "The Collapse of Intelligent Design," then you know the uses of the "wood", "spring", etc. such as the type III secretory system. Ken Miller states, "The parts of this supposedly irreducibly complex system actually have functions of their own." Of course, paperweights don't become mousetraps though...

Comment #14768 by Algebratheist on December 25, 2006 at 12:56 am

Dawkins has NEVER said that religion is the ONLY root of evil! Dawkins knows Communism, tribalism, nationalism, etc etc etc are other roots! Dawkins just thinks (rightly) that religion is the only one that cant be criticized. this guy needs to watch the Beyond Belief session with Dawkins, Harris and 2 other guys whose names fled me. its the later one where Harris speaks first.

Comment #14767 by Algebratheist on December 25, 2006 at 12:50 am

jesus titty fucking christ. there is no god!!!!!!!!!

Another impersonation:
Richard, you are not my child. You have not accepted Christ as your saviour therefore to the lake of fire you go. that is all.

Yet another impersonation: Richard, I am the Totem Pole of a large tribe. You have not recognized me. Therefore you must be hung in the forest upsidedown for 10hrs. If you survive you have a second chance. (who knows if this tribe really exists)

FUCK!

yes i read that too but ironically his brain was actually smaller (in weight) than average ("Junk Science" by Agin). that hurts the "brain size = intelligents argument" for all the racists and sexists that use it to justify their oppression

logicel, in the God Delusion he calls it Einsteinian Pantheism (p.19) and says "pantheism is sexed-up atheism" (p.18)

of course we are, in a very literal sense, one with the universe. was it Carl Sagan that said "we are all made of stardust"? im an atheist but i have what can only be describes as "spiritual" or "mystical" feelings when i think about stuff like that.

i agree with sam harris that we can have "spiritual" experiences (which are now being explained at the level of the brain) that change our day-to-day perspectives. susan blackmore also practices zen meditation but does not consider herself a buddhist.

i think if dawkins had longer to talk he would have made more sense to the audience. any body watch the Beyond Belief sessions? they were so great.

Sri,
i completely agree.
Janus,
youre referring to weak atheism and i do agree with you there, but i dont think a strong atheist can convert to theism. If he/she does then he/she never really understood why he/she was an atheist in the first place.
