1. Cult leader Pyotr Kuznetsov tries suicide after realising he was wrong about doomsday

Comment #156199 by Dr Nev on April 7, 2008 at 4:47 am

I consider suicide a horrible frame of mind to be in. Even though this person is a theist, and a fundamentalist one at that, I still understand his tortured frame of mind. I have been there, though under different circumstances and you have to be really low to get to this point. I can only hope he seeks and gets the help he needs to get himself well. I'd like to think empathy would be prevalent on a site like this. He may seem like a fool, I tend to think he is but I can empathise and wish him good health soon. Maybe after all he has been through he may become an Atheist? One can only hope.

Sorry for interrupting the flow. I've been away from the site for some time and have just got back on for a read. The thread continues... I am enjoying reading and catching up. Steve as always you are in brilliant form! Wonderful stuff guys, much appreciated. Robertson is such a laugh!

Happy birthday Richard! You're an inspiration and a voice of reason in a world that is still consumed in superstition and stupendous beliefs in the 21st century.

I wish you good health and all the best for the future.

Laugh! I laughed my arse off!! But I have to admit these creationists are a scary (rather large)bunch of loonies and they think it is there right to stop others who may not agree with their view of a white bearded dude whipping up our planet in 6 days then having a rest!

Just wondering if there was an "amber" alert issued by homeland security that an atheist may attend the film!!!

god Bless America? Welcome to la la land!!

I possibly could help David. That is if he wants to be helped. It is of my professional opinion that this deluded irrational individual needs a prescription of Quetiapine starting at a daily does of 50mg with a gradual increase up to 250mg. Naturally he will need to be monitored for a couple of weeks. I feel this would be a good start!

The madness continues! Unbelievable! This has gone too far. By giving in we encourage nutters to continue their assault on us 'infidels'! I think a barrage of offensive art needs to be spread around to correct this ridiculous decision.

16. Lou Dobbs Interviews Christopher Hitchens

Comment #136298 by Dr Nev on February 29, 2008 at 7:25 pm

I admire Lou Dobbs. He's fearlessly Independent these days. He has some strong views on immigration, but immigration is a big issue over there. The problem is it's so easy to be labelled a racist these days on that issue.

I give Lou a "High 5" for a great interview with Hitchens.

On the other hand nobody should ever bother with Fox News, they are the most unbalanced and irresponsible News Channel. Especially lunatics like O'Reilly. I have been told many of their presenters are christian fundis.

I get just a little defensive at times because people often associate vegetarianism with crazy activists, new age loonies and eastern religion, which I can understand. I understand that Steve was really making the point about animal testing which I totally agree with. When it comes to human life and animals I'm with humans every time too.

My apologises if I came across a bit uptight.

RE: 140. Comment #135395 by Jon_Sociologist
In regards to your comment regarding vegetarians/ animal activists.

I'm a vegetarian. I chose not to eat meat as I don't feel comfortable eating animal flesh. But I'm more than happy for anyone else to consume as much as they want. I don't have a problem with drug testing on animals. Not all of us vegetarians are activists, tree hugging greenies... I and many others would never dream of putting animals and trees above human causes! Simply put some of us just don't eat meat - no new age reason and no activist reasoning, and obviously no religious meaning! It's just a plain old boring reason , I and some others don't like eating meat. Actually you will find quite a few people in the medical profession are this way inclined - (no I'm not talking about alternative therapists).

Regarding Robert Tilton: What a fruit, he's the classic extreme nut case. I can't believe he gets away with it, or any other televangelist for that matter! It's pure bovine excrement! And the zombies send the money in every time. As the late great Frank Zappa used to say "They want you to spend to go to heaven!".

I've seen the farting preacher on you tube a while back. I laughed my arse off and some more...

Great stuff!

Continuing on the Iraq issue: I recommend visiting www.gregpalast.com and highly recommend his book "Armed Madhouse". In my view it is all about continuing to keep the middle east in a permanent state of turmoil (which when you think about it isn't that hard to do anyway!). The Greedy Saudis, Daddy Bush and Junior had to overthrow Saddam as he was fooling around with the output of Iraqi Oil and upsetting OPEC. Iraq has a very large amount of crude and the big boys - US and the Saudis don't want it to be tapped as they have a nice deal making big dollars. Refineries are not running at full capacity it's not about limited oil it's about we've got the stuff coming out our ears and it's not worth as much so we control the output which keeps the price up! Keeps Halliburton (Dick Cheney) very happy indeed. Keeps the Saudis really happy and naturally keeps us all very unhappy!! Even here in New Zealand we have oil offshore in the southern ocean, we've known about it since the 70's but Shell won't allow drilling! - Not enough profit can be made at the moment! It's all about $$$$$$$$$$$$$ and the conflict in the middle east comes in very handy indeed.

27. Turkey in radical revision of Islamic texts

Comment #135172 by Dr Nev on February 28, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I'm going to try and be optimistic and say this might work out to have a positive effect. As much as I detest Islam or any other religion for that matter, revising the texts is a start, especially if it can improve the treatment of Women and even become a little less oppressive. Still at the end of the day revising really means they are playing with the texts and redefining passages to try and fit with today's worldview. I guess we will have to wait and see? (I don't advise anybody to hold their breath!).

28. Dispatches: Holy Offensive

Comment #135163 by Dr Nev on February 28, 2008 at 3:53 pm

It concerns me deeply that people who belong to various faiths who often preach tolerance and acceptance continually do the opposite. Time and time again throughout history we see this, and to think we are now in the 21st Century and this type of insanity continues. It certainly says a lot about believers who, say for example - miraculously obtained a time machine (I know time machines don't exist, this is just an analogy) would happily send us all back to a more primitive age where they can behead or disembowel non believers for putting on a production such as the one shown here.

As a society I believe we are becoming too politically correct and even more so post 911. Beliefs seem to be a taboo topic unless you are praising them, and I'm not just talking about Islam. I mean all beliefs.

Free speech means we should be able to voice our opinions, and through the arts has always been a way of doing so. People are free to have an opinion but no one has the right to ban it. Being in a democratic society means the freedom of choice. Members of society can choose to view, read, and attend something or not.

Robertson is a walking oxymoron...I like it. And I most certainly agree with Paula's comments of mud slinging! The layers of mud flung are mounting, each layer contradicting the other to create some sort of mud sculpture of nonsensical proportions. The flea's are certainly biting at the moment, Atheist fundamentalists...Oh boy! Give me a break!

33. Dumb and Dumber: Are Americans Hostile to Knowledge?

Comment #133323 by Dr Nev on February 26, 2008 at 4:14 am

Dear I say it but here in New Zealand I find the few Americans here rather undereducated. I tend to agree with Henri that they value money much higher than knowledge. I was in San Francisco a few years back and one of the locals thought New Zealand was in Canada! Gee! (And this person had a college education)!! But I feel maybe it's a global thing and society in a whole is dumbing down. Look how many watch reality TV!

34. Add another flea to the list...

Comment #133298 by Dr Nev on February 26, 2008 at 3:28 am

I find it most frustrating that these authors keep on presenting the same arguments time and time again. It reminds me of Orwell's 1984 'Doublespeak'. If something is force fed long enough the 'flock' will 'buy' into it. Religious types revel in this type of mindless literature without engaging the use of any grey matter whatsoever. But that aside these books will only appeal to the brainwashed where as many books of an Atheist view tend to attract a larger broader readership of all walks of life...Well at least that is my opinion anyway.
