1. Does Religion Make You Nice?

Comment #281441 by Captain Kendrick on November 10, 2008 at 10:30 am

Yeah. Religion makes you real nice. I learned at age 13, when I went to summer camp, and my roommate asked me, before he even asked me what my name was, "Are you Catholic?"

I told him "no," and I started to talk about something completely different, and used to word "goddamn" to add color to whatever I was talking about, and he said to me, "HEY! I'll beat the living CRAP out of you if you ever talk like that in here again!"

I hated the piece of Christian garbage and the rest of the week sucked.

I also found in high school that it is not wise to advertise your lack of belief in an invisible man in the sky. They get real upset at that.

3. Bill Maher's Religulous Opens Today

I happened to be in lancaster,pa about a month ago and found it very disturbing the amount of radio stations that were of a religous nature on the FM dial.

Ah, yes...as James Carville put it, Pennsylvania is Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and everything in between is Alabama. I'm in the Philly suburbs, so my post on my show times isn't all *that* surprising...

Lancaster isn't too far from Dover, PA...famed for having a federal judge comment on the "breathtaking inanity" of the Dover school board's attempt to slip creationism into their curriculum and slap them down.

Yup. That there's is Bubba's and God's Country. You know...the part of PA where Obama was referring to "clinging to guns and religion"...

Wow. I should feel blessed (doh! Did I say "blessed"!? That's religulous!)...

I have 13 daily showings at 3 different cineplexes this weekend all within 5 miles of my house in the Pennsylvania suburbs...

And here my gal and I were talking about picking up stakes and moving upstate to "God's Country"....

5. Bill Maher's Religulous Opens Today

"There are better comedians out there doing this, but none as high profile as Maher. It is his fame, in a country that adores fame (worships it, dare I say!) that makes him a useful spokesperson, not his intellect or lack thereof."

Elli: I would have loved to see this movie made by Penn and Teller instead. Not only are they smarter then Maher (including Teller, who is damn smart, even with his stage silence), but imagine all the "Main Street" Joes who saw them in Las Vegas, and say "hey honey, look -- those funny magicians we saw live -- they have a movie, let's go see it!"

That would have ruled.

Bonzai sez:

"I don't know how well his style might impress "the average Joe". If anything I think his antics might actually backfire as he comes across as the worst stereotype of those shallow, pompous and self promoting Hollywood "liberals". "

Bonzai, I think this is exactly what the response will be. It's not the people who think of Maher and Moore this way to begin with who concern me, because they won't be swayed by this (or even watch it) anyway. But if there was a vehicle to sway those who have quietly questioned their own beliefs and life of indoctrination and brain-washing, I don't think Maher is the man to pull it off.

The thing about Maher (and I do think he can be funny at times), is that he has a gift for spotting contradictions and pointing them out. His problem however is that he often mistakes a contradiction for hypocrisy, and thinks that whenever he spots hypocrisy, it defacto makes him smarter than everybody else, and calls out the "hypocrites", and that's when he comes off as smug and smarmy. He's not as clever as he thinks he is, but like a cold reading psychic, he throws a lot out there, and every once in a while he does it get it right.

I'm kinda worried about this movie, and anticipate myself lowering my head and covering my eyes in embarrassment while watching.

While I appreciate Maher's stab at it, and appreciate even more that someone of his status is championing reason, skepticism, and disbelief, I'm worried that somebody like Maher might hurt more than help. I've watched him off and on since he started Politically Incorrrect on HBO, then the networks, and now Realtime, and while I appreciate his gregarious attitude towards religion, he has a strong natural tendency to come off as very smug and smarmy.

So I predict that myself and other non-believers will watch and think "right on!" and even relish the ridicule and scorn I suspect Maher will heap on, and the believers will be predictable in their own scorn and offense at this movie. I doubt it will shed much light or enlighten any potential skeptics.

Healthy ridicule is good, but bullying ridicule done with a sophomoric Michael Moorish technique doesn't serve anybody except those who who feel the same way anyway.

We'll see....I still want to see it.

Jesus: "And now from the empty hat I will prestigajagoo... proostiga... prastigatijay... pull a live rabbit. yes. Rootah, Vootah, Zoot! And observe, a rabbit! Yes. Forgive me, my friend. Do you like blacksberries' pie?"

Caiaphas: "Eh, no, no... did you say blackberry pie? Yum, yummy."

Jesus: "What a dumb bunny!"

Caiaphas: "Of course, you realize this means war."

9. Cardinal accuses Anglican Communion of 'spiritual Alzheimer's'

Comment #217387 by Captain Kendrick on July 24, 2008 at 10:05 am

Why doesn't the Anglican church just call bullshit on the whole religious thing, keep the churches as a social centre to go to for a sing-song on a sunday, followed by tea and cream-cakes.

The Unitarians already have that market cornered.

I'm sure Bill Mahr would have had a field day with this.

11. Atheism on the buses

"Tell you what. I have a 20 foot long enclosed trailer, which I use to haul my race car to tracks around Ontario, New York, Ohio and Michigan. For the same money, I will put this sign and any others that will fit, on the front, back, both sides and even the roof."

rod-the-farmer:

How well would THAT go over with the NASCAR set ????? Excuse me if I'm stereotyping too much, but I can just picture Bubba standing outside his F-350 telling you "ya'll have anything to say 'bout *MY* God, then we have a problem!"

12. A trip to the Creation Museum

It sounds like a hoot! I want to go! You can't even parody something like this! I can almost swear I saw this on a Simpsons episode! I can hear Lisa moaning and making some disparaging comment....

13. Atheism on the buses

Comment #206599 by Captain Kendrick on July 8, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Cool, I like the sentiment, but I can't justify raising that kind of money to plaster George Carlin'ish sound-bites around town. If I had the money to pledge, I would rather spend it on funds to defend folks like Mark Steyn and others being railroaded because they hurt some Islamic religious feelings in Canada, or to buy spines for the Scottish Police so they can stand up to outraged Muslims over photos of cute puppies, or to make sure that creationism stays out of the public schools and that my kids actually get real educations.

Not so much hated as feared, but as Yoda sez:

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."
