1. Does science make belief in God obsolete?
Comment #170209 by mrgoodjob on April 27, 2008 at 1:35 pm
Something can be useful but still obsolete. Obsolete just means that something more useful or more designed to task has come about. Religion is a hammer and science is a nail gun. Religion still provides believers with pragmatic benefits, but if believers had the slightest bit of courage they would embrace that which provides the higher level of pragmatic benefit. There is a word for those who refuse to adapt in such a way as to maximize pragmatic benefit: disordered!

Children don't have rights, for instance, some schools have dress codes... so NO, preventing this turd from wearing his shirt is not unconstitutional. When he grows up, or when he's not attending school, he can do what he wants. I was suspended for saying "Jesus" three separate times in Indiana. If Christian apologists can justify suspending me for that than we can justify suspending this twerp. Right?

It is not the case that we need to get rid of moderation, we need BETTER moderation, from skilled moderators who take their jobs seriously. Most moderators tend to be professors who basically just sit and pick their noses while the debaters are free to undermined the idea of proper argumentation. You're an idiot if you think we need to get rid of moderation in a debate setting. Well, maybe you're not an idea, but you're dead wrong nonetheless. THIS video is not a debate, it's a chummy conversation. Plain and simple.

She'll be offered a better job teaching somewhere else for more money, write at least one book, be paid for public appearances, and be recognized for as hero... Good for her!

I agree with Dawkins regarding having open "conversation" in this particular setting, but I must disagree completely with him given the debate setting. I think the debate setting is extremely lacking in proper, firm, aggressive moderation. This allows for far too much rhetoric and we often see the same arguments raised time and time again. Take for instance the Hitler, Stalin, Mao argument about atheistic violence. The question has been raised verbatim to all the horsemen when they have clearly addressed this argument and squashed it. And there are countless other examples. This lack of moderation in debate setting is a colossal waste of time and has no place in academia. I see a tragic "slippery slope" concerning this and I beg you to draw comparison with the dog and pony show that has become the American political debates. Let us not allow this corrupt behavior to spill over into academia as well. We should have annual awards for "best academic moderator" to illustrate the importance of making sure that either debater, or any given collection of debaters, are not allowed to shape an academic debate outside what is considered proper argumentation. I have seen high school debaters with a greater understanding of argumentation than PhDs across the board.

PLEASE FOLLOW THE LINKS PROVIDED AND REQUEST THAT THIS HEATHEN BE REMOVED FROM OUR "SECULAR" DEMOCRACY. Seriously, jokes are all good, but this hag is an elected official. That means now is the time to actually express your disgust through the proper avenues. Also, if you see her throw poop (of any kind really)in her general direction!

I like the abortion discussion but can't take the time right now to read everyone's comments, so sorry. I must say that I don't care either way. May hope is, for arguments sake, that advancements in birth control will eliminate the need for abortions entirely. We must remember that we live in anthropocene, and one way to deal with a problem is to simply eliminate the problem. Nobody wants to have an abortion in the sense of "Yeah, abortion time". We can handle this issue like true engineers!

"A four-person Carroll Area Paranormal Team will use thermal imaging equipment and voice-recording systems".
This is what I don't get about the so called "metaphysical", whether we're talking about ghost, gods, or souls. Isn't it the case, that at one point or another, the so called metaphysical agent in question, must interact with the physical world in order to be of any consequence whatsoever?
So which is it? Physical or metaphysical??

After I die I want to be turned into a grand taxidermic statue. And if I leave a substantial estate, I will request that whomever inherits my fortune will be required to display my wonderfully grotesque statue in their front lawn, without obstructions, for as long as they wish to prodigalize my funds.
