1. The Problem with Atheism

Comment #77892 by JimC on October 11, 2007 at 3:24 am

Thanks for the link, oxytocin - great little article!

In general, the meditation aspect of Sam's OP did not completely convince. I'm not denying the potential benefit of such experiences, but he sems to see them as the only antidote to an otherwise inevitable permanent state of ennui. Not so! Just read Dawkins on science to comprehend the infinite possibilities of rewarding rational cognition.

2. Young, British Muslims 'getting more radical'

Comment #19631 by JimC on January 29, 2007 at 1:46 am

TheCodeCrack goes too far. If there was a way of deporting only the young firebrands who reject the West (in which case they should want to go to Saudi Arabia or the like!), and allowing moderate muslims who are prepared to accept pluralism to stay, I would say go for it. But this would be very difficult. Perhaps a 3rd generation will move away from their fundamentalist parents.

3. Can Jews and Evangelicals Get Along?

The article is purely political, for good or for ill. The religious parts of it are only loose labels for certain political groupings anxious about alliances etc.

4. Richard Dawkins' Report Card

Teachers these days have to be so politically correct and humourless in our report writing that there will be little to smile about in todays report on future interesting human beings.

5. Pat Robertson: God told me of 'mass killing' in 2007

The only problem is that a terrorist attack in '07 is not that unlikely (eg. revenge for Saddam). He would be sitting pretty if one occurred.

6. How Old is the Grand Canyon? Park Service Won't Say

An appalling, anti-scientific fraud. Even a religious person who understands the separation of church and state should be scared by this.
The comment by JohnC about Uluru in Australia is very important as well: it is possible to present indigenous creation stories and scientific fact/opinion as two, separate but valuable narratives, each in their own different ways.
