Hopeful said, "It is not in the nature of religion to be kept private, and I don't believe it is possible for a person to behave outwardly completely independently of their heart-felt inner beliefs, particularly when we are talking about a job that involves the management of society."
On the contrary, people in the medical field do this very expertly. A friend of mine, who is a surgeon is very able to critically analyze study data and information pertaining to science but when it comes to religion, he just believes. That's it, he just believes. It is called compartmentalization. And many other doctors think this way. They do not question their religious beliefs and are able to keep those beliefs neatly away from science. They do this because the religious beliefs are never analyzed.

Well, i understand the speaking out for percieved discrimination against a religion or group of people on this site. As a woman, i must say, i agree with those speaking out against degrading and dehumanization of my gender. I abhor polygamy and genital mutilation and i abhor religions esp because they contribute to most of the persisting sexism in the world today. Yes sexism did not originate from religion but religion has become the most authoritative justification of such practices. I don't care what religion these people are and I hope they get the full punishment of the law visited on them, including the mother. Ignorance of the law is not a viable justification for breaking it.

there goes the age old arguement that humans are only altruistic because of religion.

the greatest fallacy that is religion is once again exposed. What was that you said about religion as the source of morals again? Only a handful of humans are actually adults. The majority of the world population is still struggling in infancy where crimes/whims are not judged by the harm to the recieving individual but by how god will view it. Hence the sin and later repent mentality. It takes a big baby to believe in a sky daddy

yes, i too agree that this exchange has run its course. People like Boteach do not listen to reason. I have seen several debates where he has been corrected on his naive interpretation of evolution yet he keeps making the same arguements over and over again. He is really a showman, on a mission to get laughs from the crowd.

my apologies to all the non-chauvunistic males here but stories like these make me passionately dislike men. I grew up in a patriarchial society and have been a direct witness to events like this. Absolutely disgusting! Words are not adequate to express my disgust of such a behavior and such a mindset.

iagree with richard dawkins on his point. I noticed that the religious tend to yell their points at certain points which seems very comical to me. And like dawkins i have often wondered if that's the best they can do. Another classic is the appeal to emotions. Dinesh's trick of choice. I wonder how long these guys can continue to pretend that they actually believe the rubbish they are spewing. Really, such a double life is got to be driving them insane

the story reminds me of when i was a teenager and attended regular "fellowship" with my mom, sister and nanny at the catholic charistmatic renewal movement (i bet no one's heard of that group before). It scared the **** out of me. The speaking in tongues, casting out demons, people wriggling and writhing front left and center. It was the stuff my teenage years nightmares were made of. As hard as i tried, i never could speak in tongues or be "moved by the spirit". Neither could my sister and mom. But our nanny was a pro, if i say so myself

there are alot of issues in question.
I argue that Ms Manji does not know the religion she claims to be defending. I see that in christians in the US today. I identify with Ayaan Hirshi Ali because i too grew up in an african country and bore the full brunt of the female repression, authoritarianism and control inherent in the christian religion. Most Americans i meet who claim to be christians do not know much about the bible or the religion they claim to be practising. It is difficult for me to sit down and listen to how christianity is "so moral" when i have experienced first hand the immorality inherent in the premise of and practise of the religion. When you look at verses in the koran that are blatantly sexist, i wander what Ms Manji would have to say in defense of theose verses. For example, husbands are instructed to beat their wives as a last resort. Can she also ascribe this to the arabic translation? I think she is emotionally attached to the religion. She wants to change it completely but still keep the name. Ok, good but at least have the courage to admit it
