2. The Axis of Evo

Comment #298091 by moderndaythomas on December 6, 2008 at 7:02 pm

As I sit here and think about what to say while listening to some old disco number on the radio because I'm too lazy to get up and change the station (and because I think that "Knock on Wood" is an awesome song...), I'm pondering the trails that I've had in teaching my kids about Chucks thoughts.

To me, natural selection need not be any more complex than your average game of checkers.
There's scant need to understand gene transcription, mutation, cell specialization, or population genetics.

It's wonderfully simple in fact. Just like junior has dads eyes and moms pout, junior will have a chance some day, maybe?, to give these things to his babies.
The trick is that these things will be either helpful in junior attracting a girl or not, and if not then someone else's eyes and smile will get to be the next bunch of adults.

Well I have to get up and change that station now because even though Any Stewart had a smoking hit back in the 70's, the Village People, however, did not...

8. Educated Catholics have sown dissent and confusion in the Church, claims bishop

Comment #286475 by moderndaythomas on November 18, 2008 at 3:35 pm

"These well-educated Catholics have gone on to occupy influential positions in education, the media, politics, and even the Church, where they have been able to spread their so-called loyal dissent, causing confusion and discord in the whole church."

You don't say.

9. Religion: A Tool to Keep the Parasites Away?

Comment #279059 by moderndaythomas on November 5, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Kiwi

Locking your females away would likely keep them from contracting many diseases.

This guy's going away to fight a war and he gives his best friend the key to his wife's chastity belt.
He tells his friend to hold onto the key for five years and if he doesn't return, let her free.
As he's galloping away on his horse a cloud of dust catches up to him and he discovers his friend out of breath.
Panting his friend says, you gave me the wrong key!

Anyway, I'm turned off of anything suggestively scientific that begins "they propose a theory".

10. Somalia: Rape Victim Executed

Comment #274298 by moderndaythomas on October 29, 2008 at 10:58 pm

A group of men performed the execution in one of the city's main squares in front of thousands of people

This poor woman was stoned to death by no more than a pack of boymen bent on their own impotency with their left hands.

These men need to spend more of their time working out how to keep a woman happy in bed and less of their time fostering a paranoia over whether or not she's got eyes for the neighbor.
It all comes down to useless peckers, kids.

It's clear to me that you don't have to be any good at cunnilingus on a pretty girl, all you have to do is stone em to death for bitching about it.

Needles suffering for the wealthy perhaps. It sounds as if you've been the receptacle of so much proscribed bullshit that you're not thinking too clearly.
There's no suffering where you're from?
If not, I'll move there. I won't need insurance, I guess?

their "reputation" is inhanced by their behaviour

Their reputation? These are kids we're talking about. A four year old is not concerned with image.
I personally don't know what to make of this study though.
I'm all too familiar with kids, as my domesticated automobile will tell you, and they do indeed have an over baring self interest in getting what another has that they don't.
But why?
A throw back from an earlier age of survival while at a tender and fragile stage perhaps.
It would be absolutely essential to obtain enough nutrition to make it beyond a vulnerably infant/toddler age...and this may explain the seemingly strict human characteristic resultant from an early child birth due to cranial size.
Enter natural selection.

15. Faith Attack

Comment #265950 by moderndaythomas on October 17, 2008 at 4:21 pm

It's all been said before. The fear of losing their faith because someone else asks for a little evidence and will not settle for none.
A hundred and seventy years ago somebody proposed a better explanation for all things living than had ever been before, and this bothers them.
The only way they know of to survive is through the re-enforcement of further ignorance.
It's the same reason that Mormans travel in pairs...to safeguard against a better arguement.

Comment #260534 by moderndaythomas on October 5, 2008 at 4:36 pm

Swordmaiden

this Day of Prayer thing is a way of indicating that it is assumed to be "normal" for everyone to want to pray.

Absolutely! It maddens me that in certain circles your very worth is measured by whether or not you hold faith in something. It needn't not even be something specific, just a thing.
This prayer day comes off as a way for the religious right to posture themselves as the possessors of such worth. Pray if you have it and skip it if you don't.
It's bullshit in every sense; smell, texture, and taste.

18. Brunswick school board to consider creationism teaching

Comment #256852 by moderndaythomas on September 29, 2008 at 3:19 pm

If a process is slow, I can see how that might be a reason to expect not to see anything now.

Ha Ha Ha, I was just thinking that same thing.
I don't know if opening the particular can of worms of teaching creation in class is wise dispite its utter lack of evidence, but, this equal time notion pisses me off.
science is not a democracy. Should creation wind up in the class, it should have time proportional to its evidence.
This should be made clear.

22. Pastor Michael Guglielmucci spun gospel of lies

Comment #234977 by moderndaythomas on August 22, 2008 at 10:19 am

I had commented on one of Carroll's books someplace and a Christian had followed up with one of his own. He had said something to the effect that all free thinking Christians should go ahead and read it and that the evidence, to which he was not denying, didn't effect his faith.
Here, I think, he wasn't thinking through the implications of acknowledging evolution and the insoluble relationship that it has with religion.

23. Supernatural science: Why we want to believe

Comment #234946 by moderndaythomas on August 22, 2008 at 9:41 am

The Christians that I know always end their prayer with "God willing". They play it safe here, acknowledging that there are no real chances of miraculous intervention. As a result, if real science fails to cure an organic disease, it then was Gods will.

we are causing animals to evolve just by hunting them.

The travisty here is that these species have not been selected by nature but rather by us. They are then introduced into an environment that is not evolving as they are and still requires their previous traits that had been selected for naturaly.

I'm afraid so. Sex is often just not worth it anymore. Too much work (and risk, given the topic) for too little pay-off. Many times, masturbating even feels better. And once you're spent, your blood stops boiling all the same and you can get back to work (or sleep).

I'm afraid that I have to disagree with you there, Appleby. To be sure there are some risks to consider, I've always found that the benefits have always outweighed the costs.
You're talking about the cheap imitation, the quick nickel to the slow quarter. I'm a slow quarter kind of guy.....
It occures to me that there are a lot of Isaac Newtons at this site with a classical education that outclasses mine, but that fall short in the annal's of love.

There's nothing said in this article worth defending, sure, and an intelligent retort is all it takes. Some light reading shows the facts. Comment #210366 by moderndaythomas on July 14, 2008 at 11:02 am

The programming for empathy is something that is "hard-wired" into the brains of normal children, and not entirely the product of parental guidance or other nurturing,

Why this is a surprise, I don't know. We know that this trait is not inessential to our survival, and had to have been present early on in the evolution of our species. Though I suppose that the Christian set fancies themselves the rightful owners of morality.

If I recall correctly, the same thing happened in Australia. Trying to say guns are the cause of violence shows you are clearly not thinking reasonably. If criminals want guns, no laws are going to stop them because guess what THEY ARE CRIMINALS!

So just what has the United States done about criminals if then they don't want to reevaluate their possition on gun ownership?

The main deal with handling and operating firearms is to do it responsibly and safely, and despite many of the far leftists believe, it can be done.

An organisation (the church) that not only discourages scrutiny but blatantly squashes it; this guy thrived in it. It was his ideal medium. He later stole a surmountable sum of money from this company and then proceeded to check himself into the psych ward of the nearest hospital where he would receive further sympathy. This guy knew all the angles.

"Most remarkably," he said, "orbital migration, the movement of one eye from one side of the skull to the other during the larval stage, was present but incomplete in both of these primitive flatfishes." For both sets of fossils, the eye had begun the journey but had not crossed the midline from one side of the fish to the other.

Another fine example of science yet again filling a hole that was once empty. Where will the fundamentals go next I wonder?
And as for the necessity, what about the need to avoid the pull and tug of tides and currents? A fish that has less of a profile would certainly be less under the influence of the tides.
