Jackson led a research team in 1978 given unprecedented access to the shroud by the church.
The Shroud of Turin Research Project determined the shroud was not painted, dyed or stained.
It is not known how the Shroud's faint brown discolorations, which form a negative image of a man, came to mark the linen, Jackson said.

Ha! It was always the same.
When I was a teenager learning to play guitar my pals were learning Rolling Stones songs while the wee Christians were all singing 'Kumbaya' down the youth fellowship.
Umm..... what to choose........?

The honours system is pretty well devalued, if not completely discredited, by corruption scandals and the awards handed out to people for being potential passengers on Golgafrincham Ark B.
I predict future knighthoods being awarded for the likes of services to hair braiding, face painting, and Big Brother Winning.
Not worth the candle.
Think honours, think the type of people who get them.....
Think Lord Archer!

"Imagine taking a journey without faith - faith in an unknown driver, faith that there will not be an accident. You would never leave home."
Twat!
Yes I can imagine a journey without faith. I've lived it all my life.
How come I have no problem living without it then?

You're right about some of us not respecting Islam.
Islam is a religion. It is an impossible fantasy about a non existent god and is purely and simply a lot of nonsense.
It also gets people killed.
What's to respect?
If it gets people killed in the name of something which doesn't even exist it ought to be despised rather than respected.
Tell me why I should respect it.

This one's a bit of a coup because The Metro has such a broad readership.
For the benefit of overseas people, who won't know, it's a free newspaper distributed daily on public transport.
Just about everybody who commutes on buses trains and subways comes into contact with the Metro every working day.
Although the content may be old hat to us, it's a terrific publicity opportunity for the voice of reason, and the popular letters page will be full of atheist/theist arguments for the next few days.
This takes the awareness-raising out of the broadsheets and into a whole new market.
Ya wee stoater! (as we might say on a certain very sweary Scottish satire site)

Hi Weefree and Knox.
Do your lot still chain up the swings on a Saturday night in the Western Isles so the kids can't play on them on a Sunday and risk damnation?
Just asking like.

I lost a fifteen year old daughter in a freak accident at home three years ago. I found the body.
I've lost count of the idiots I've stopped myself punching since then because they've tried to tell me she's with god.
I had to chase a minister from my door because the clown wanted to exploit a child's death to perpetuate a death cult.
I also meet well meaning fools on a regular basis who tell me to move on, it's in the past, time to get over it.
To those people I say they have no clue what they're talking about.
Go and read up on post traumatic stress disorder and find out for your own stupid busybody patronising selves how this stuff stays with you for ever. You simply develop cleverer ways of living beside it.
Carol Fiore, we walk the same road and it's not an easy one.
My respects.

I'm sick of this "no morality without a god" crap.
Here's the deal.
We're social animals. We live in communities. This is an evolved thing.
Communities themselves can be seen as superorganisms where, according to my understanding of natural selection, at least a majority of the individual members must behave in a way that does no harm/gives a survival benefit to the community.
Any community will include individuals who renege on this bargain.
A community with larger than critical number of such harmful individulas will fail and die.
Communities which survive, by this model, select for those whose behaviour contributes to the well being of the group, or at least does no harm.
I believe that morality. Real morality, not some hypocritical shite about what we do with our genitals, comes from the need to live together in a viable community.
No god required.
Prove me wrong.

We went to our kid's school parents' night last week and brought this up with the head teacher.
"Over my dead body!" was the reply.
Teachers aren't as daft as these idiots think they are.
