1. Bill O'Reilly and Kirk Cameron on Atheism

Comment #51293 by Civilized Worm on June 22, 2007 at 8:16 am

Anyone willing to accept the willfull ignorance of a former child star and a reactionary rabble rouser over actual scientists are beyond hope.

2. Why Christopher Hitchens is not Great

Comment #40614 by Civilized Worm on May 14, 2007 at 3:31 pm

He has saturated his mind with the far less believable claims of Marx, Darwin, and Einstein.

So this fellow is not only anti-evolution, he's anti-relativity? Wow.

At night when Christopher Hitchens lays his head on his pillow, there is a truth that washes over him that he can not escape. None of us can. And it is good for us to recognize it...

"There is a God, and I'm not him!"

How incredibly arrogant to claim such insight in to another man's mind! And these people are supposed to be humble!

No Christopher Hitchens is not great, he's awesome.

3. Cardinal: homosexuality a form of prostitution

Comment #39986 by Civilized Worm on May 12, 2007 at 1:59 pm

I'm struggling to think of a non-religious group that cares at all about banning specific sex acts.

Your answers in the thread title, prostitution is a sex act between consenting adults that has is stigmatised by religious and secular alike.

4. Lou Dobbs w/ Hitchens on Al Sharpton's Bigoted Remark

Comment #39981 by Civilized Worm on May 12, 2007 at 1:43 pm

The Church of Latter Day Saints is built on racism, and Sharpton has said far more offensive things in the past; such as "White folks was in caves while we was building empires ... We taught philosophy and astrology and mathematics before Socrates and them Greek homos ever got around to it."

Romney is on record saying his favourite book is "Battlefield Earth".

A Mormon $cientologist? I think I may have discovered my worst nightmare.

5. 'god is not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything' by Christopher Hitchens

Comment #36260 by Civilized Worm on April 30, 2007 at 4:54 pm

"2. A detailed analysis of the role of religion in creating masterworks of art, music and architecture (and their role in generating religious feelings regardless of religious belief), and how these might be replaced in an atheist world."

When was the last time religion inspired great art? Nowadays it's all about the mind altering substances.

6. Are You There, God? It's Me, Hitchens

Comment #36255 by Civilized Worm on April 30, 2007 at 4:40 pm

I don't think I have a strong enough liver to be the next Hitchens.

7. Atheists split on how to not believe

Comment #34237 by Civilized Worm on April 23, 2007 at 3:20 pm

"No - not at all. Life is complicated. The world is complicated. Some people will always seek simplistic solutions. I prefer the truth."

Do you think the prospect of oblivion after death appeals to us? You speak as if we are clinging to a position in spite of evidence to the contrary like creationists do, what is it you think we are avoiding?

8. NEXT MONDAY: Bill O'Reilly interviews Richard Dawkins

Comment #33227 by Civilized Worm on April 19, 2007 at 4:14 pm

"The bit I'm looking forward to the most is O'Reilly barking "Why are you athiests so DAMN ANGRY!?" at a calm Dawkins."

Exactly. As long as he stays calm and friendly he will come off looking better.

9. Sam's Flea!

Comment #32855 by Civilized Worm on April 18, 2007 at 1:43 pm

"Does the Bible even teach that rape is bad, anyway?"

I'm pretty sure it's OK so long as she's unmarried and you then marry her and give her dad some money.

If we get our "objective morality" from God then why are most people now against slavery which is endorsed and even promoted in the Bible?

11. Praying for the Apocalypse

Comment #30722 by Civilized Worm on April 9, 2007 at 2:01 pm

The Rapture isn't even mentioned in the Bible, it's basically a heresy.

12. Militant atheists: too clever for their own good

Comment #30314 by Civilized Worm on April 7, 2007 at 2:09 pm

I could barely believe that article, it sounds like a parody of the religious mindset.

And my name is Robert Aitken for anyone who might be interested for whatever reason.

13. The Most Hated Family in America

Comment #30070 by Civilized Worm on April 6, 2007 at 5:20 pm

"I am not gay either, but I would be willing to kiss a guy in front of them just to really give them something to get wound up about..."

<-

14. Dawkins vs Haggard: the Python Edition

Comment #30069 by Civilized Worm on April 6, 2007 at 5:03 pm

ATTENTION PYTHON FANS: Do NOT buy any of the new complete series DVD sets as they are planning to release another round of sets next year with a proper collection of extras.

15. Kansas State School Board Bans Pokemon Due to Evolution Content

Comment #29773 by Civilized Worm on April 4, 2007 at 3:49 pm

There was a furore about Pokémon a while ago because one of the creatures used magic.

The really sad thing is that a lot of people probably think that Pokémon gives an accurate portrayal of the theory of evolution.

16. Religion useless to Dawkins

Comment #29354 by Civilized Worm on April 2, 2007 at 4:01 pm

Well at least it's a positive article that could encourage some people to pick it up.

17. The Selfish Green

Comment #29322 by Civilized Worm on April 2, 2007 at 2:55 pm

I couldn't get that video player to work but the whole thing is up on youtube as well.

18. Religion

Comment #28930 by Civilized Worm on March 31, 2007 at 4:50 pm

I love Bill Hicks but he had some strange seemingly drug based religious beliefs. And he was a conspiracy nut.

Carlin is almost unknown here and deserves to be far bigger than Billy "willy jobby bums lavvy" Connoly. Perhaps if he had died twenty years ago people would be more interested.

19. Debate between Alister McGrath and Peter Atkins

Comment #28919 by Civilized Worm on March 31, 2007 at 3:36 pm

"Or, what about the infamous 'Lord, Lunatic or Liar' nonsense? Surely a smart chap could instantly see that Jesus might have been honestly mistaken or that others put words in his mouth (as, indeed, was the case)?"

And what of all the others who have made messianic claims, both in ancient times and more recently? Surely the same arguement must apply to them?

"-Rape, I go to hell."

Actually I think so long as you rape an unmarried woman and then give some money to her dad and offer to marry her you're home free.

21. U.N. Panel OKs Measure on Islam

Comment #28883 by Civilized Worm on March 31, 2007 at 1:08 pm

I assume muslims are still free to defame christians, jews, atheists, women and homosexuals? I guess that would fall under their freedom to express their religious beliefs.

22. 'The Evolution of Homer' Intro

Comment #28761 by Civilized Worm on March 30, 2007 at 4:49 pm

The last two series of South Park have been very dissapointing and Family Guy has sucked since they brought it back, at least the Simpsons only started to suck around series 10.

23. Richard Dawkins Explains 'The God Delusion'

Comment #28546 by Civilized Worm on March 29, 2007 at 5:03 pm

What I'm sick of is when people try to attack TGD on issues that he's already addressed in the book. I'm convinced that the majority of people haven't even bothered reading it first.

24. Neil Peart cites The God Delusion in new album's liner notes

Comment #28448 by Civilized Worm on March 29, 2007 at 8:24 am

I'm from Scotland, and Nickleback are one of the best examples of terrible Canadian music.

Still you did give us Leonard Cohen and Neil Young so it's not all bad.

25. The Case for Teaching The Bible

Comment #28026 by Civilized Worm on March 27, 2007 at 4:07 pm

I have to agree that if more people read the book from cover to cover rather than just listening to the bits that are picked out for them there'd be far less people believing in it.

Plus there's nothing like being made to read a book for school to make you hate it.

26. Neil Peart cites The God Delusion in new album's liner notes

Comment #28025 by Civilized Worm on March 27, 2007 at 3:59 pm

Worse than that, CANADIAN Progressive Rock!

(Nothing against Canada but their bands suck)
