1. Sam Harris at AAI 07

Mintcheerios
I agree with your comment 71. 82236, absolutely.
This is what convinced me that Sam was talking sense.

Atticus-of-Amber

Please may I have your permission to call myself an adogmatist?
I want to be able to throw Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao etc. back into the opposite camp when they throw them at me.
Sam is right about reframing the debate. All the dogmatists, theistic or not, should be in the opposite camp. (I am talking about debates, not war!).

Global US hegemony or submission to Allah!
What a choice!

On the subject of BBC programming, they are always going on about how the public loves "reality shows", so why don't we ask for a show entitled "Now, This is Reality!"?

4. God Bless Me, It's a Best-Seller!

Oh, dear!
I would love to read this article, but it keeps closing down my Internet Explorer!
Am I the only one with this problem?

5. They let anybody onto the faculty at Oxford nowadays

I thought "sucker" was a wittily amusing misspelling.
Surely it wasn't just a mistake?

6. OUT Campaign Launched, 'Scarlet Letter' Shirts Now Available!

I will be surprised if I see anyone wearing them in England. Not because they would be scared, but because it is not necessary. Here, atheism is the default position. One is assumed to be one, unless one states otherwise.
So, I'll be looking out, but don't expect to see any!

7. Richard Dawkins on Hardtalk

Comment #58784 by Homo Incredulous on July 26, 2007 at 5:51 am

I am surprised that this point hasn't already been made before.
Surely, if we connive in the labelling of some children as "Jewish children" or "Muslim children", we are also conniving in the exposure of these children to the dangers of revolting religious practices, such as genital mutilation?
This sure seems wicked to me.
Shouldn't all children have the right to be protected from such abuses, regardless of the faith of their parents?

9. Consciousness Without Faith

I hope that all those scientists at that retreat that Sam Harris mentions are able to extract something tangible from it, so that they can explain it to non-spiritual persons like me.
Can we find out who those scientists are?

10. Without God, Gall Is Permitted

So, if I go around telling people I am an "approaching zero atheist," do you think they will understand what I mean?

Zoro
I am not very good at mathematics, so how can I express my estimate of the probability of a god existing in any understandable and meaningful way?

13. If they preach the cause of the poor, they're my people

Comment #15978 by Homo Incredulous on January 4, 2007 at 4:31 am

"Religion has been the cause of terrible deeds - although none perhaps in recent years as abhorrent as those of atheists"
So which abhorrent deeds of recent years were perpetrated by atheists? I can't think of any!

14. Divided by a common language: Richard Dawkins clarifies his position

Comment #15793 by Homo Incredulous on January 3, 2007 at 3:18 am

But isn't it difficult to draw the line between indoctrination and socialisation? My fear is that so many young parents in the Uk are already finding the whole thing too difficult to negotiate, and are giving up on their kids. We consequently have many children growing up without any parental guidance, in a practically feral state.
