Speaking as an Australian, we are lucky that when religious elites like Pell speak loudly they only succeed in driving more Australians away from their church.
The two most senior politicians in the state of New South Wales which contans Pell's diocese of Sydney are just as publicly defying his threats. Largely because that is what the great majority of Australians would want them to do.

It may be puerile, but one of the funniest movie lines of all time has to be Woody Harrelson in "The People vs. Larry Flynt" calling him Mr Fartwell when they confronted each other in court

As has been said he's not as smart as those who have proceeded him in recent times by speaking out. He missed a perfect opportunity to rebut the argument that Christians aren't as violent as Moslems by reminding the interviewer that Western Europe was gripped by exactly the same type of violence in the 30 Year War from 1615 to 1645.
But he does have an ability to be heard and is another voice that I think will help more than hinder.

Unfounded and unwarranted criticism must be unpleasant for Richard but at least these book will stimulate the masses to think and possibly arouse their interest, which is the first step to awaking from their current stupor.
5. Do stop behaving as if you are God, Professor Dawkins

He seems to be a bit miffed that he didn't make it in to "The Root of All Evil ?"
Prof Dawkins may suggest that you publicly debate this guy and give him his 5 minutes in the limelight. From my little knowledge of him I would say he wouldn't mind that you wipe the floor with him as long as he gets on TV.

I didn't know much about thus guy so watched a video of his lecture at
http://www.cis.org.uk/centralsouth/dawkins-god-http.shtml
Basically he goes through some very long winded analysis of Dawkins' arguments in TGD to consistantly draw a conclusion that shows he has left out important caveats of the arguments in his consideration.
As an example he says Dawkins is using the word virus to describe a meme as an analogy but then discounts memes altogether by saying they can't be seen under a microscope so they are not real. There is silence from the audience which leads to a conclusion about the intelligence if his listeners.
7. Panel discussion on atheism where no atheists are included

Hopefully this is an attempt by CNN management to steal back some Fox News market share. If the people with editorial control at CNN can't see this as what it is things are worse than we thought.
Or maybe the theist are just getting really scarred because they know they are going to have to face up to some hard emotional realities if too many atheists keep pointing out to them that they are deluded.

No one can stick it to them as well as Sam. If you have a bittorrent client I can recommend this rendition of his standard speech as one of his best performances.

11. Executing Saddam Hussein was an Act of Vandalism
Comment #15882 by harryh28 on January 3, 2007 at 1:46 pm
An act of vandalism indeed, from a one point of view but perhaps it is a positive step in the quest for the removal of religion from politics worldwide. As a symbolic and permanent end to the rule of Saddam in the minds of Iraqis and people in surrounding countries he threatened, his death is advantageous.
Hopefully now the majority Iraqis who are not extremists can have even more courage to confront the remaining two sources of politically motivated violence , the Shiite and Sunni extremists, and openly support forces of moderation. In this way I see Hussein's execution as an effective method of memetic engineering.
A coalition of moderate Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis is emerging in the Iraqi parliament, it's power being recently strengthened with approval from the most senior Shia Ali al-Sistani . He is obviously partly motivated oppose the radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr whose Mahdi Army is instigating most of the violence.
This I believe to be a necessary first step towards an Islamic period of Enlightenment which should eventually be followed by the removal of religion from public society an achievement we are yet archive in the West.
But perhaps we need to achieve that further maturation of our societies before we can rightfully expect them to move to the next stage.
