Well, this is a remarkably light-hearted thread. Often gets a bit too earnest for me in here.
And FWIW, I do believe in the existence of Northern Bright. Her posting on here is at least better evidence than that God chap has ever come up with.

I think it's great that such a piece was aired on mainstream tv in the states. It may seem wishy-washy to us, but it could have opened the minds of some believers.
I just hope that "new atheism" (don't like the term myself) isn't a trendy media topic, fashionable at the moment, to be replaced by the next flavour of the month in due course. We must keep disbelief on the agenda.

coldby - re your comments above #63336 - check out this lyric from Frank Zappa from his song DUMB ALL OVER:
Hey, let's get serious...
God knows what he's doin'
He wrote this book here
And the book says:
He made us all to be just like him,
So...
If we're dumb...
Then God is dumb...
(and maybe even a little ugly on the side)

Speaking of holy books & the toilet, here's Ricky Gervais on Desert Island Discs:
Kirsty Young: So, you get the complete works of Shakespeare, and the Bible ... you don't have to have the Bible if you don't want it.
Ricky Gervais: Nah, I'll take it. The paper will probably come in handy.

"Thanks again. I presume you were not joking. You seriously think you know ALL the arguments from the religious side?! Thanks for providing me with more evidence of the fundamentalist nature and appalling arrogance and ignorance of the New Atheism."
OK, weeflea, give me ONE new argument. Go on, just one. That we've never heard before.
Has God spoken to you recently? Has he vouchsafed any more crucial tidbits to you?
The "good" book was written almost 2000 yrs ago. Don't you think it's had a pretty good airing already?

Comment #60474 by Suffolk Blue on August 2, 2007 at 2:57 am
"Whatever amuses you. Most people are not taught religious things from childhood – at least not in Europe."
WeeFlea, If you believe what you stated here, you are an idiot and even more deluded than I could have thought. Anyone that went to school in the UK got school assembly, prayers, all that bullsh#t, and a presumption from pretty much everyone in authority that it was all based on truth. That God exists.
Weeflea - there is no God. There is no afterlife. You are a troll. You are so far up your own arris that you cannot even begin to contemplate what it can mean not to have a faith in a skydaddy. Utterly pathetic.

Comment #60443 by Suffolk Blue on August 2, 2007 at 1:11 am
WeeFlea - most humans are fed religious bullsh#t from the time they are born. The god-botherers get enough airtime. But as soon as a few atheist books are written, the faith-heads get all hot under the (dog)collar. Makes me laugh.
We know ALL the arguments from the religious side - they have been in circulation for millennia - why on earth should we need to read more of this tripe?

Further to my previous posting - my wife is a well-educated woman, but is a literal believer when it comes to the Bible ... believes in the letter of the garden of Eden tale, the Noah's ark tale, etc. Will not discuss her faith, thinks that people should respect each other's beliefs and so on. Tried to watch Dawkins TV Root of Evil series with her, but she walked out after 5 mins.
Now it is my 50th birthday later this year & she is bound to ask me what I want for a gift. I'm thinking of asking her to read an atheist text as her special present to me!
My question is therefore - which text? TGD? End of Faith? Letter to a C. Nation? Breaking the Spell? God isn't Great? Or another?
Any suggestions gratefully received!

I feel that religion is certainly on the retreat in the first world (excepting the USA of course), but I regret that it is alive and kicking in the third world. (I'm a British atheist married to a Kenyan Christian & I can tell you, religion is pretty rampant over there)

Simply put, the Arabs wanted their own religion so hijacked the old books and formed Islam. And the great American Nation, not wanting to be left out, leapt at the chance to form their own some 1100 years later. A bit embarrassing for the American Empire not to have its own religion(s) I expect.

I don't know anything at all about Hitchens the man and don't really understand why people are making a fuss about whether he is a likeable bloke or not or what his stance on the Iraq War is.
If our desire is for all people to lose their religion / supersition and come to their senses (and that is certainly my desire) - then we have to accept there will be six billion atheists out there with all sorts of different political views.

weefree: "frightening" ?!? I thought you god "fearing" people enjoyed being frightened? LOL - you are funny sometimes.
Eradicating religion has nothing to do with eradicating god-botherers like yourself - as you well know - so stop posting such nonsense. It is to do with de-conversion through argument, logic, and ridicule. And your beliefs are ridiculous: I hope one day you'll realise that and come to your senses.

OK, weefree - I'm struggling here to work out what you find wrong with the Nietzsche quote "I call Christianity the one great curse, the one great intrinsic depravity, the one great instinct for revenge for which no expedient is sufficiently poisonous, secret, subterranean, petty – I call it the one immortal blemish of mankind…" Sounds reasonable enough to me.

Surely this is what the Bible & religionists do at every opportunity. In fact, to disbelieve the Bible or Koran is punishable by death in the opinion of many of these fools.

Interesting stuff. I often use the Norse & Greek & Roman gods as an argument. Let's hope that in a few years' time the middle eastern monotheistic gods will seem as absurd to everyone as the Zeus & Thor & Mercury & Venus & the rest do now.
